Affordable mobile devices and services coming from Nokia
Posted by: Maria Mihale in Nokia

In its ongoing effort to bridge the digital divide, Nokia introduced a range of affordable mobile devices and innovative services specifically for people in emerging markets. Besides Nokia’s lowest cost handset to date and its first handset for emerging markets with an integrated digital music player, Nokia unveiled a range of services that leverage the power of Internet, which will be available starting the beginning of 2009.
“In 2002, Nokia unveiled a strategy to lower the cost of owning and operating a mobile phone and to bring the benefits of mobile telephony to people in emerging markets. Today, we’re expanding that vision by introducing a number of devices and services that aim to bring the power of the Internet to these markets as wellâ€, said Robert Andersson, Executive Vice President, Devices, Nokia. “The mobile device and the Internet are a powerful combination in connecting people with each other, accessing information, news, entertainment and sharing. By introducing products and services that are affordable, relevant and easy-to-use, we believe Nokia can fuel the growth of the Internet in emerging markets through mobilityâ€.

The first Nokia services that will be available in the emerging markets will focus on email, agriculture and education, which present the strongest demand, based on consumer feedback. So, Mail on Ovi, which is enabled on Nokia Series 40 devices, offers the possibility to create an email account directly on the mobile phone. This way, you aren’t obliged to use the personal computer, giving you the chance to communicate in new ways. A trial of Mail on Ovi will be available in a few select markets by the end of November 2008, while the global rollout of Mail on Ovi will be launched on all currently shipping Nokia Series 40 devices by the end of 2008. On the other hand, Nokia Life Tools is a range of innovative agriculture information and education services designed especially for rural and small town communities in emerging markets. Nokia Life Tools is a great help for farmers and students to overcome information constraints and to be provided with timely and relevant information. SMS is used to deliver the critical information to ensure that this service works wherever a mobile phone does, without the hassles of additional settings or the need for GPRS coverage. The service is said to be launched in the first half of 2009 with the Nokia 2323 classic and the Nokia 2330 classic as the lead devices in India, and then in select countries in Asia and Africa.

As far as the handsets are concerned, they will hold a price range from €90 which is roughly $117.00 right down to an amazingly low €25 which is $32.00, which is really quite incredible.
The new Nokia portofolio will be represented by Nokia 7100 Supernova, Nokia 5130 XpressMusic, Nokia 2320 classic, Nokia 2323 classic and Nokia 2330 classic, Nokia 1202 and Nokia 1661.
The Nokia 7100 Supernova is a stylish addition to the popular Supernova collection and is designed for style and entertainment. The colorful device features a high resolution color screen, FM radio and a 1.3 megapixel camera and support for Share on Ovi, Nokia’s online photo sharing service, and other photo sharing sites. The device is also provided with support for Mail on Ovi and with a browser for surfing information on the Internet. The Nokia 7100 Supernova is expected to begin shipping in the fourth quarter of 2008 with an estimated retail price of 75 EUR.

If you’re a music addict, then the 5130 XpressMusic is the perfect device for you. It has dedicated music keys, a digital music player, FM radio and a standard 3.5 mm connector for headphones. It’s also equipped with an integrated 2 megapixel camera and supports both image sharing through Share on Ovi and the Mail on Ovi email service. This one will start shipping in the first quarter of 2009 with an estimated retail price of 90 EUR.

But maybe you love better classic phones. Nokia 2320 Classic, Nokia 2323 Classic and Nokia 2330 Classic are affordable devices that support Mail on Ovi and Nokia Life Tools services. The 2323 offers an FM radio with recording and an Internet browser while the 2330 is equipped with an integrated camera. All three phones will be available in the second quarter of 2009, Nokia 2320 classic and 2323 classic with an estimated retail price of 40 EUR, while the 2320 classic is expected to cost 50 EUR.

This new lineup will be finished by the Nokia 1202 and Nokia 1661 candybar phones. At only 25 EUR, Nokia 1202 is Nokia’s lowest cost mobile device to date and is specifically designed for people in rural areas. It includes standard features like a flashlight, extended battery life, loud ringtones and a phone book for up to five users. The Nokia 1661 is Nokia’s lowest cost color phone including an FM radio and a large color screen. It also supports flashlight, loud ringtones and multiple notebooks. The Nokia 1202 is expected to begin shipping in the fourth quarter of 2008 while the Nokia 1661 in the first quarter of 2009 with an estimated retail price of 30 EUR.
