Already sick of so many wrist cell phones?

Well, maybe you shouldn’t be, because whether you like it or not, lots of similar devices are still to be designed and to see the light of the day. This is just the way things are there is nothing you can do about it. Cell phones are far from being what they used to be when they first came up, functional devices that helped people be in touch with one another. Today, it’s all about style and design!

In the given context, let me present to you a device that comes in a unique outfit, elegant and sophisticated in the same time: the Disposable Pre-paid Phone, which does more than just nicely wrap your wrist. To be more specific, the phone takes care of the user in a way that everyone would like to be taken care of.

You might say that there’s no need for you to own such a thing, but come on! Take a short look to the world out there and to everything that keeps happening in the past couple of years! You see nothing but conflicts of all natures (political, social, economic), accidents that you wouldn’t dare to imagine in the first place, natural disasters that suddenly end up with the lives of so many innocent people. So you should reconsider the presence of an emergency phone in your surroundings. Because you can never take care of you too much! It is never enough!

Wrapped around your wrist, the Disposable Pre-Paid phone permanently indicates your position to those who’d save you in case you need help.

Created by designer Shirley A. Roberts, the phone is simple and very cheap to manufacture. Another great advantage is the portability, which can’t be overlooked, as you know how much you hate carrying your phone with you all the time.

Nevertheless, I’m not sure if the wrist cell phones will ever go to mass production, becoming commercial products that one can find in every shop window.

Ragio, the circular concept phone

If there’s something I got used to very fast since the first day I wrote an article about technological inventions of all sorts, then that certain something refers to my expectations as far as the results the human mind is able to come up with. The reason for such a thing to happen is that I’m always blown away with the apparitions that make the world evolve, being the proof of the fact that people are inexhaustible sources of imagination.

A relevant example is the mobile phones realm, which is more dynamic than any other domain and more prolific, of course. Now, you can do almost everything that you like and that can be done with a cell phone, from making a call, the most rudimentary function of such devices, to surfing the web, finding restaurants or museums that you want to visit when you’re traveling around the globe, or to watching movies and listening to your favorite music.

A very interesting aspect of cell phones nowadays is the shape that they are presented with by their ingenious creators. Take the Ragio concept phone for example which was designed, according to Chino Ragragio, the inventor, “out of pure fancy and whim”. This stunning circular concept phone is the result of a special challenge, as there is no circular phone that he has heard of before.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

Chino Ragragio, a Quezon City-based designer, Philippines, graduated with a degree in Information Design and he is currently employed at Sony Philippines, where he is a graphic artist. Taking very personal the lack of such a concept phone, Ragragio felt it his duty to come up with this circular device. I’m not sure how well you can tell it from the picture, but the top panel is designed to rotate 180 degrees.

More than that, the handset comes with music and video capabilities, for those who are crazy about the multimedia features-rich cell phones. The keys are large enough for anyone to see them, even if you might suffer from eyesight problems.

I don’t know if you’re impressed with this circular concept phone, but I’m sure you’d be delighted to see how it works if it would someday hit the mass production.

Concept phone based on Liquavista Technology

As the time passes by, more and more unbelievable concept products become reality. There’s nothing that the human mind can’t conceive, with its tremendous force and ambition. And if you thought that a concept phone made of e-paper is something that one can only gets to see in a science-fiction movie, then allow me to disagree. Such a device is so close to become a dream come true, that it might be presented at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), a trade show that will be held in January 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Being sponsored by the Consumer Electronics Association, the show will not be open to the public. Unfortunately for those who wanted to become acquainted with the latest innovations.

The concept phone that you can see in the picture above was designed and developed by Seymour Powell, a well known design studio, and it’s based on a technology that was created by Liquavista, an innovation company that is based in several countries like Netherlands, United Kingdom and Hong Kong. The phone uses a full color flexible e-paper, the result of the Liquavista Technology that has as a starting point the principle of Electrowetting. The main advantages of the e-paper displays are the fact that they are between two and six times as bright as a LCD, they are a whole lot brighter and more colorful.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

Therefore, the device displays the information you need in colors, and you don’t have to do anything, meaning you don’t have to flip it open. The technology is far from being in its final stage. There are still many researches to be made. Nevertheless, there are very good chances for us to see such concept phones at CES, in January. This would be a very important step when it comes to mobile phone displays, as electronic paper is said to be the future of this domain.

You’ll have to wait a little bit longer for an e-paper-based concept phone to be released on the market, but it seems that the Liquavista Technology has what it takes to give people what they’ve been promised for so long.

The S-shaped Nokia concept phone

When trying to decide which mobile phone to choose from the wide variety of handsets available on the market, you must be very focused on some features, if you don’t want to get lost in the overwhelming realm of all sorts of technological apparitions.

Mobile phones are getting so thin nowadays, that they’re almost ignoring every rule of handheld ergonomics. That is the reason why, taking into consideration those sleek and sexy Nokia concept phones that were launched in the past, the S-shaped Nokia concept phone looks kinda peculiar, don’t you think so? Take a good look at it and you might see I’m right. All of you out there who were fans of those bulky Sony Ericsson T phones that were in vogue in the late nineties, you might like the S-shaped. Therefore, bringing back memories from years you can hardly remember, the device will fit badly in your pocket, but mind this and think about the moment you’ll be pulling it out, when the S-shaped will look cool (or not, depending on your preferences).

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

The device was created and developed by industrial designer Heikki Juvonen who studied in four different countries, who is now trying to find better solutions for the world we live in. He thinks that all products should excel in as many aspects as possible throughout their entire life cycle. Having all that in mind and the realistic ergonomics, he decided to create a futuristic concept phone provided with all accoutrements.

Maybe the renderings look great and glossy, but I wouldn’t purchase such a device, not in a million years, as I think it won’t be comfortable inside my pockets. More than that, I am quite sure that you won’t like either the idea of carrying your phone in your hand all the time. Being focused on usability, the designer came up with a new balance structure for the phone. The bottom part has been made heavy and the same makes for a good grip.

As we’re talking about a concept phone, there is nothing that can be said on its pricing and availability. And if we’re not sure that the device will find some place in your pocket, then we are positive on the fact that the S-shaped Nokia concept phone will hardly be able to fit in your budget.

8 Mobile Device gives you two flip-up touchscreens

Because one touchscreen isn’t enough anymore for mobile phones users, two Korean designers, Kyung-Ryul Lim and Miyeon Kim, came up with a new concept handheld communication device that is equipped with two flip-up touchscreens. They feature video, telephone, dictionary and lots of other specifications.

The communication device was dubbed “8” due to its 8 shape frame, and helps the user move dual touchscreens. The functionality of “8” won’t be the same as you move the dual touchscreen, and the feature is said to bring out special feelings from the users.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

Kyung Ryun Lim and Miyeon Kim design moving parts: “The mobile phone has dual touchscreen and 8 shape frame which help to move dual touchscreen. Moveable dual touchscreen is easy to use and has various functions according to its shapes. It can be used as an electronic dictionary by moving touchscreen and can be used to displayphone”.

But, I don’t know, the portable device seems a little bit too long for something that theoretically, just theoretically, should fit in your pocket. Not to mention the fact that the whole idea of having the screen show what you type near the virtual keyboard you’re using seems to be a very difficult task for the users’ eyes. Moreover, let’s suppose the strong are indeed strong enough not to break off in your pocket, as they’re able to lock down into the device, but the question is if there are enough programs and uses for these moving parts. Moreover, if this were produced in numbers that made them inexpensive enough to be a “standard” phone, I’m not sure how many of you would choose it over the other “basic” models.

Still, it seems that such devices are more and more in the designers’ minds, as not long ago appeared another similar device, the Pantech Flame phone-frame concept. This handset was created by Jung Woo Baik and is a pretty cool idea that was dressed up in a very neat-looking outfit. The foldable camera phone can be placed like a flip calendar on your desk or it can be used as your average digital frame. The Pantech Flame is equipped with a 5 megapixel camera which is placed on the front side of the phone, near the keyboard and it allows you to take really great photos for you to display on your “frame”.

I’m not sure there is a market for such devices, so all we can do is to just wait and see what happens. Though, I hardly see this eccentric phone going into production. Not very soon, at least.
