At first glance, people are tempted to think that solar-powered cell phones, for example, have nothing to do with intuition, due to the fact that such devices are usually carried in a pocket or, why not, in a bag or purse. This means that whenever you run out of battery you will have to wait until you get home in order to have it all charged and ready to be used. But the bad thing is that such thing usually happens in the evening, when the sun has already gone to bed.
Not to mention the fact that situations like those when lacking electricity can easily make you turn your attention towards solar-powered gadgets. It’s hard to imagine that such situations can happen in this developing world we all live in these days, but everything’s possible.
And what would you say about a device that isn’t only solar-powered, but also a waterproof cell phone? It sounds spectacular, isn’t it? And here you have a shiny handset designed and developed by Sharp and the Japanese company AU (KDDI).

The phone has no name for the moment, but it is said that it will be released sometimes in June. A great thing about it is the fact that every time you charge, and it won’t take you more than 10 minutes, you will get approximately 2 hours of stand-by time and one minute of talk time. One minute, for God’s sake? One minute is a little bit disappointing, if you know what I mean.
Unfortunately, we don’t have other features at our disposal, but what we know is that a waterproof cell phone, powered by sun, would be a very nice idea.

Maybe Sony Ericsson isn’t the most ingenious innovator in the world of mobile phones, but people are surely having great expectations as far as this company is concerned. Thus, the guys over Sony Ericsson have just released in the Japanese market a weird device, maybe the weirdest of them all, the Sony Ericsson Xmini. And if some would think this is just another Walkman, let me tell that the Xmini is, in fact, a Walkman phone.

Part of KDDI au’s range of CDMA-based devices, this is far from the latest mobile phones that the Japanese people are used to in the last months, equipped with high-class features such as 800x480 display or a 5-megapixel camera. Still, the Xmini is similar to a Walkman player when it’s closed, but once it slides, you can see the alphanumeric keypad that reminds you of what the device really is: a phone.

Measuring 75 x 44 x 18 millimeters and weighing approximately 75 grams, the newest Sony Ericsson walkman phone was designed to be pocket-friendly. Apart from the regular features, the Xmini is provided with a set of dedicated music keys that are places somewhere below the display. They are hidden and they can be revealed only when you want to control the Walkman player.

As far as the features are concerned, they include a 1.8-inch TFT display with a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels, an unbelievable 8-megapixel QVGA camera, clear stereo sound, CDMA and Bluetooth for connectivity, email support, 4GB of internal memory.

It seems that Sony Ericsson Xmini will be launched only in Japan, being carried by KDDI. This means it will be compatible with KDDI services, including the LISMO Video and EZ ‘Chazu Uta’ for audio downloads. The walkman phone is expected to be released sometime before Christmas, but unfortunately there is no information about the price. Another bad thing is that chances are pretty slight chances for the newest Sony Ericsson device to make it Stateside.

KDDI wanted to come out with something different on the market and their focus on innovation helped in creating three cool concept phones back in 2001, known as info.bar, wearable and rotary.
The Infobar cell phone was released on the market in 2003 influencing the mobile handset design industry.

During 16-20 April, at Fondamenta Jahier Via Solari 37-39 in Milan, Italy, will take place the Japan Design 2008 exhibition hosted by 15 Japanese companies which focus on design innovation.

There, KDDI will showcase Media Skin, the sixth model from the au design project, created by Tokujin Yoshioka and Infobar 2 conceived by Naoto Fukasawa.

Media Skin cell phone is based on surface treatment and special paint which unveiled two textures.
The orange and white colors were made of silicon particles-based paint, while the black color has soft paint with special urethane particles for a relaxed touch feeling.

Infobar 2 is the enhanced version of the well known Infobar cell phone, coming in an innovative design that makes us think of a square candy melting in the mouth.
The technologies used include One-Seg television and Osaifu Keitai electronic wallet.
