Motorola i365IS, a safe device for nasty environments

Do you know what an intrinsically-safe device is? And if I ask you is not because I underestimate you, but because I, for one, don’t have a clue.

Searching on Wikipedia, I found that the “intrinsic safety (IS) is a protection technique for safe operation of electronic equipment in explosive atmospheres. The concept was developed for safe operation of process control instrumentation in hazardous areas, particularly North Sea gas platforms”. The phone wasn’t designed from scratch, if I may say so, as we can recognize a previous Motorola device, the i365, which was sold by Sprint starting the fall of the last year.

The i365IS is “a device that is incapable of releasing sufficient electrical or thermal energy to ignite fuel and cause a fire or explosion. Intrinsically safe devices are safe to use in hazardous areas that may contain flammable gasses, vapors or dust”.

If you can’t understand the reason why I’m asking such a thing, then you should also know that Sprint, the American carrier that you are familiar with, has just announced the availability of a new Motorola cell phone, the i365IS, a push-to-talk handset for the Nextel Direct Connect network.

As far as the features are concerned, they include: an ultra-rugged design, as it combined the military specs that make the phone resistant to dust, shocks of all sorts, humidity, rain or vibration, a 64k colors display with a resolution of 130x130 pixels, Bluetooth connectivity, GPS navigation, a speakerphone and Second Line Service. This safe device comes with support for Nextel Direct Connect services, such as Direct Connect, Group Connect, International Direct ConnectSM, Direct TalkSM, Direct SendSM and NextMail. Measuring 5.3 x 2.1 x 1.2 inches and weighing 7.05 ounces, the phone provides up to 300 minutes of talk time.

Unfortunately, there are no details yet about pricing or availability, but there’s no doubt about the fact that Sprint will release very soon.

Following the pattern of other cell phones, there were many rumors about i9, the Motorola clamshell phone that was very often talked about, even if the lack of information should have stopped everyone from making all sorts of wild suppositions. Nevertheless, we’ve reached the day when the handset has been given the official treatment and its full name will be from now on Motorola Stature i9.

The clamshell cell phone is expected to become available via Boost Mobile in no more than a couple of weeks (sometime by the end of this month) and then (a little bit later) via Sprint.

"Motorola Stature i9 is the latest example of our continuing commitment to our Nextel Direct Connect customers giving them best-in-class push-to-talk services on an incredibly attractive device," said Danny Bowman, the president of Sprint's iDEN business unit. In addition, he said that "Sprint has invested billions of dollars in the iDEN network, adding thousands of cell sites to bolster capacity and coverage. As a result, the network is performing at best-ever levels enabling customers using Stature or any of our iDEN devices to experience the speed of the fastest national push-to-talk network".

Creative Valentine’s Day ideas

The fuss we’ve all been forced to “enjoy” during the holiday season is already forgotten, even if we like it or not. It is dead and buried. So dead and so buried, actually, that we moved on to the next phase: the Valentine’s Day and the excitement it brings.

Some would say that it's early to think about it, because the waiting will be so very long, but that doesn’t mean that enthusiasts don’t have the right to express their anxiety if that’s what they want to. Valentine’s Day is a controversial event, if I may call it this way, and people have different positions when it comes to the attention it should be given.

Nevertheless, the point is that, contrary to what some might believe, manufacturers from all around the world realize that the signification of this day can be highly exploited, commercially speaking, and spare no efforts in order to gain some extra incomes. It’s not that they are greedy of gain, but let’s face it! That’s the way things go!

And if you’re in an ample process of discovering creative Valentine’s Day ideas, then you won’t mind this suggestion of mine, the Motorola PEBL Rose Bloom. Cell phones are perfect for a gift idea, moreover if we’re talking about expensive devices, adorned in a way that you couldn’t imagine.

Motorola has just launched the device, being a clamshell phone with the shape of an egg and having a rose drawn on the front face, right in the center. The phone is especially designed for the Valentine’s Day, so keep in mind the fact that the PEBL Rose Bloom is just a fashion-centric phone when complaining about its features.

Speaking of those, the phone comes with a panel that is sensitive to touch and is placed on the outer lid, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, a 2 megapixel camera, a MP3 player, Bluetooth v2.0 A2DP connectivity, USB, EDGE / GPRS, and a rate of the data transfer of up to 7.2 Mbps HSDPA.

The phone is expected to become available in Korea, being sold by SK Telecom, but there are no details yet about the price.
