I’m sure that no one would dare to blame if you said that you have never heard about Modu, because, let’s face it, this isn’t a name that people have to chance to hear about on a regular basis. I have to admit that I haven’t either and I can’t say I feel somehow ashamed. It seems that Modu is an Israel-based mobile phone manufacturer that made its appearance in this dynamic and always surprising world a year ago.

The company has just announced its first device, which is being launched only in Israel. At least for the moment, we suppose. More than that, the phone designed by Modu can be purchased right away, being offered by Cellcom.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

The new Modu phone has been checked out by the guys over Mobo.co.il and they said that it “has potential”. However, it looks like a handset that was conceived sometime in the past, as it has some features that are a little bit disappointing. They refer to the display, which is quite small, a user interface that won’t impress you whatsoever, while the connectivity is only represented by EDGE.

The cell phone comes in a tiny, tiny case and features a number of jackets. Depending on the jackets, customers can have either a music phone, a fashion one or a GPS device. If you only want the phone and a basic jacket, it will cost you $130. If you’re curious about the release date in other countries, you’ll have to be patient, because we don’t have this information for the moment.

The Android platform is a must-have for every cell phone manufacturer, as it’s all the rage these days. And if it’s understandable why famous companies are fighting each other for the Android market, what’s quite surprising is the fact that unknown players have dared to join this exclusivist party, trying their best to have a competitive Android phone to release in the market.

Such devices were presented by the manufacturers with much ado, even if the whole thing ended with the press release. Relevant examples are the DSTL1 designed by General Mobile and Kogan Agora. Now, there’s another Android cell phone waiting for the public appreciation.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

The HIGHSCREEN PP5420 (quite complicated, don’t you think?), a project of Vobis Computer, is a device that is expected to become available sometime during the next week in the Russian market. Rumors say that the handset is in fact the “reincarnation” of the Mobinova Ice, which you might already read about. The main difference consists of the fact that the Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system has been replaced with the Android 1.5.

The list of features includes the Qualcomm MSM7201ATM (528 MHz), the Google Android operating system 1.5, GSM (850/900/1800/1900), WCDMA/HSDPA 7.2Mbps (900/2100), HSUPA, a 3 inches WQVGA flat TFT-LCD touch sensitive display, a 3 megapixel camera with autofocus, 256MB ROM/ 128 RAM, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, mini USB, FM radio, TV-Out, accelerometer, microSD card support and an 108 mAh battery.

The phone measures 114 x 53.5 x 13 millimeters and weighs no more than 120 grams, the battery being included. The price of the PP5420 is said to be 360 Euros for the Russian customers.

We’ve heard it all before. The last news that circulated over the Internet about a universal cell phone charger was related to a project developed by GSMA. Back then, a wild estimation has been made: it was said that by the end of 2012 most of the phones available in the market would be charged using a standard Micro USB charger.

It sounded like a very crazy and ungrounded idea, but here we have some information that’s even more overwhelming: it seems that starting next year customers will be able to find in the European market the phones that are to be compatible with these universal chargers, or at least this is what the EU executive said.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

“People will not have to throw away their charger whenever they buy a new phone”, said Guenter Verheugen, EU Industry Commissioner. And trust me, there are so many phone accessories that are wasted each year in the European countries and we’re talking about thousands of tons. Not to mention the fact that according to some estimations concerning the same continent there are more than 400 million cell phones that are being for the moment and approximately 185 million units are being purchased each year.

The companies that joined the team of those who agreed to adopt the solution of a universal charger and to bring compatible devices in the market starting next year are Apple, LG, Motorola, NEC, Nokia, Qualcomm, Research in Motion, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Texas Instruments. It seems that the handsets that will be compatible with these chargers will be data-enabled ones.

Up until that 2010, we’re waiting for the EU norm that we were promised according to which the next generation of cell phones would be based on a standard micro-USB socket.

I don’t know how many of you have heard about Mio Technology, but what you should know about this company is that it is specialized in manufacturing all sorts of Personal Navigation Devices, PDAs and, of course, smartphone. It seems that the Taiwan-based company is preparing these days the release of a brand new smartphone, running on the Windows Mobile operating system.

Dubbed Mio Amber, the phone hasn’t been given the official treatment yet, but there are some rumors and pictures of the device circulating on the Web. More than that, there is also a full list of features to help you make a first impression.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

As I said earlier, the phone runs on the Windows Mobile OS, the 6.5 version, and it’s quite well equipped: a 3.61 inches WVGA touch sensitive display, GPRS/EDGE and WCDMA/HSPA connectivity, a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, a second camera, a VGA one, which is probably aimed at video calls, G sensor, GPS and assisted GPS, Bluetooth 2.0, 528MHz Qualcomm MSM 7201A Turbo processor, 256 RAM, 512MB ROM, FM transmitter, noise cancellation, a microSD card slot and a 1500 mAh battery.

The company has not announced the release date of the Mio Amber, nor the price, but we’re looking forward for more details to become available, so stay tuned!

At the beginning of this year, sometime in March, if I remember correctly, I told you about Toshiba TG01 (which you can see in the picture below), a smartphone that was prepared to hit the market as soon as possible, being equipped with the Snapdragon CPU, designed by Qualcomm. The TG01 is one of the two smartphones that are provided with this spcific processor and that are expected to become available this year, along with the Acer F1.

It’s just that I don’t know if one of them is aimed at the Korean market also. However, we have good news for the Koreans: Qualcomm has just announced that there are two devices prepared for them and for them only, both based on the Snapdragon.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

To be more precise, the company will soon launch a smartphone and a smartbook that are both compatible with the Snapdragon platform. Now, it’s interesting to know who the manufacturers will be. It seems that the smartbook will be created by a Taiwanese company while the second device, the smartphone, will be produced by a company that is based in <del datetime="2009-06-26T07:01:32+00:00">Taiwan</del> Korea. Will it be Samsung? Will it be LG? Well, we shall live and we shall see, right?

The great news is that Qualcomm assures us of a release of both devices that is going to take place by the end of this year, sometime in the fourt quarter. Unfortunately, we don’t know nothing about the prices.

Collaborations between companies are not weird for those who know that joining forces together can easily turn into a very good solution when trying to face the competition. The most important aspect is related to the following aspect: not everyone is capable of doing such collaborations and not all of them are meant to be successful.

In the given context, here we have the result of an intense work and of many efforts made by National Geographic and the company called Cellular Abroad: a dual SIM cell phone, which is said to be called National Geographic Duet Travel Phone. The name of the model, consisting of letters and numbers, is D888.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

Presented as a handset that was “designed specifically for the needs of the international traveler”, the phone is equipped with features like two SIM cards, of course, Bluetooth connectivity, a camera of an unknown number of megapixels, FM radio, television (I’m not surprised) and a card for external memory of 1GB.

There are, of course, lots of National Geographic-branded little things that you’ll be able to enjoy when using this handset, such as ringtones, wallpapers and all sorts of videos that are related to the travels you can also see on National Geographic Channel.

The phone comes with a pay-as-you-go SIM card which allows the user make the phone calls he likes in approximately 185 different countries and receive free calls in about 80 countries. Not to mention the 30 minutes that represent an outgoing call credit which can be used in most countries. You can buy the National Geographic Travel SIM card separately from the device, as long as you already have one that you can use internationally.

Now let’s see what the officials have to say: “Our service offers comparable international coverage to carriers such as Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T, but at a fraction of the cost. In today’s economic environment, there is good reason to utilize National Geographic’s international cellular service when travelling”, said Sebastian Harisson, who is the President of Cellular Abroad Inc. He further added that “the unique features of the new Duet handset perfectly complement the equally unique qualities of the service”.

As for the price, you’ll be able to buy the phone from Cellular Abroad or several retailers, like Amazon or Expansys USA, for $199.

Yesterday was the big day for the guys over Opera Syftware because they launched the latest Opera Mobile version, the 9.7, to be more precise, aimed at Windows Mobile. This is, of course, a better version of the so very popular, so very famous browser that people can use on their smartphones.

The Opera Mobile 9.7 beta is based on the turbo-charged technology which became reality due to several factors, such as: server-accelerated rendering and compression technology. Opera Turbo uses a compression technology that is advanced enough in order to bring more speed to data transfers and to diminish, as much as possible, the data that has to be downloaded. The reduction is of approximately 80 percent.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

The latest Opera Mobile includes the rendering engine of the Opera Presto 2.2, which can be used for the desktop version of the browser. This engine is designed to help display the webpages on your cell phone a whole lot faster.

In addition, the Opera Mobile 9.7 beta comes with add-on Opera Widgets manager and Opera Widgets SDK. The first one enables an easy access of the user to the services they most like, such as Bubbles, GeoQuiz, Google Translate, MyStatus or Twitter.

“There are other mobile browsers on the market that claim to be faster and more Web site-compatible on Windows-based phones, but I challenge users to take Opera Mobile for a test drive and discover a new standard for speed and compatibility”, said Jon von Tetzchner, CEO at Opera Software. “Opera Mobile 9.7 leaves other ‘sluggish’ and ‘painfully slow’ browsers in the dust. It is our belief in One Web that challenges us to develop technology such as Opera Turbo. Not everyone owns a 3G phone and not everyone needs to. This is why Opera’s focus is on improving our browser so that your EDGE network feels like you’re surfing 3G style or better”, Tetzchner further added.

The Opera Mobile 9.7 beta can be downloaded right now from the official website of Opera.

The rumors about an Android cell phone designed by General Mobile first appeared at the beginning of this year, back in late January, early February, when I was telling you about their plans to bring in the spotlight a new device compatible with the Google platform. Back then, the company was very anxious about the release of the DSTL1 Imaginary, a device that was presented as the world’s first dual SIM cell phone, based on the Android operating system.

We haven’t heard anything about it until now and we’re happy to see that the guys over Google Mobile don’t have in mind a failure. This means they will move forward, to the next level, so they announced their intention to launch the phone sometime in the near future, in June, to be more precise.

Rumors coming from the Android Authority say that the first countries to enjoy the DSTL1 are the United States and Turkey, being followed by Germany and Russia.

Dual SIM mobile phones aren’t precisely what one can call a cutting edge apparition on the market, but people are still excited about having them, because they have the possibility to satisfy both their personal and professional needs.

Each and every company is trying to have dual SIM devices in their range of products, and so does the Czech company called Mivvy, which you most probably haven’t heard about up until now. I don’t know about you, after all, but I must confess I haven’t. Anyway, the point is the Czech company has just introduced three dual SIM mobile phones. Not one, but three. They were baptized as it follows: Mivvy Dual TV Touch, Mivvy Dual Nio and Mivvy Dual Slide.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

Now, characteristic to all three handsets is that they come with tri band GSM/GPRS connectivity 900/1800/1900 MHz), while the second SIM card is based on the GSM frequencies of 900/1800 MHz.

The first in this discussion is the Mivvy Dual TV Touch, which brings touch sensitive capabilities and, of course, a TV tuner, a 2.6 inch QVGA display, a 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth connectivity, stereo speakers, MP3 player, FM radio and WAP browser. The phone measures 107.4 x 52.5 x 14.5 millimeters and weighs no more than 90 grams, providing 4 hours of talk time and 140 hours of stand-by time.

Let’s pay some attention to the second phone, the Mivvy Dual Slide which is equipped with a 2 inch display with a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels, a photo camera, Bluetooth connectivity, MP3 player and FM radio.

As for the last one, the Mivvy Dual Nio, it is very similar to the previous one, the Dual Slide, the only difference consisting of the QVGA display.

The prices are probably very important for all of you, so here you have them: the Dual TV Touch retails for 160 Euros (or $215), the Dual Slide for 150 Euros (or $202), while the Dual Nio costs no more than 120 Euros (or $162). The only disadvantage is that you’ll have to go to the Czech Republic in order to get one for yourself.

If you remember the LG GD910 and the sensation it was able to create at the Consumer Electronics Show which took place at the beginning of this year in Las Vegas, Nevada, then you surely remember that its success is in fact a consequence of the fact that the GD910 was a watch phone.

Now, following the example given by LG and hoping they will also have the chance to impress everyone with their device, other companies from all over the world managed to bring the same idea in the spotlight. One of these companies is the Swiss-based Handyuhr. It’s somehow a surprise, because we’ve accustomed to Chinese cell phone makers so far to come with dual SIM watch phones.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

Called M860, this is a dual SIM cell phone that the user can wear on the wrist, and is equipped with features like the tri band GSM connectivity (850/1800/1900 MHz), the two SIM cards, a 1.4 inch TFT display with a resolution of 128 x 160 pixels, 260k colors and touch sensitive feature, a mini-stylus that is designed to help the user to control the screen, Bluetooth 2.0, a 1.3 megapixel camera, MP3 player and a 1GB microSD card which is included. But one can use cards of no more than 16GB.

The watch phone measures 75 x 52 x 18 millimeters and weighs 69 grams. As for the price, it is said to be sold for 799 Swiss francs, which means approximately $710. Quite expensive, if you ask me, but if you’re interested, you can go to the official website of Handyuhr and grab one for yourself.
