I hate Facebook, but I’ll have it on my phone

It seems that shouting out loud how much one hates Facebook or any other social networking website is something like a nice thing to do, which will surely bring the appreciation of everyone else. So, if you’re one of those saying “I hate Facebook and I’m proud of it!”, you probably won’t like the news I’m about to tell you about! But God forbids that you will be caught with the new Facebook application on your phone after saying nasty words about it!

A couple of weeks ago, a version of the famous social networking website was announced for the BlackBerry, called Facebook 1.5, so it was just about time for Microsoft to do something. As a consequence, the company has just introduced a Facebook application that is aimed at the Windows Mobile, versions 6 and 6.1. And it’s official, as you can go to the Microsoft website and download the application from there.

If you’re curious about the new application and what it is able to do, let me tell you that it will allow you to send messages to those who are in your Friends List, to take pictures and videos using your phone and then share them all on Facebook, to call your friend and, of course, to manage your profile anywhere, anytime.

One thing that you should not neglect is the fact that the new Facebook application runs only on devices that are provided with the Windows Mobile 6 and Windows Mobile 6.1. As for the 6.5, it is expected to be able to run the application in the near future.

If you’re interested in having your Facebook account at the tip of your finger, which means you’re not an “I hate Facebook” type of person, then you can go to Microsoft and download it from there.

Firefox for Windows Mobile, based on the Google Location Services

People are crazy about geolocation these days, because this is one of the ultimate trends of this new era. Everyone is trying to identify the real-world geographic location on their personal computer or mobile phones, as long as they’re connected to Internet.

Firefox for Windows Mobile is, which is also known as Fennec, is said to be updated with a brand new feature, the so-very-adored-by-everyone geolocation. If you wonder how this will be possible, let me tell you that it is thanks to the Google Location Services.

According to Doug Turner from Mozilla, it seems that the geolocation will be something like an “opt-in-tool” that helps users share location. But the location is shared only if they express their desire. Doug Turner said that: “We are happy to announce that Firefox 3.5 and Fennec will be using Google Location Service. We found that we agreed on the many privacy concerns around location. Do check out Mozilla’s privacy policy and Google’s privacy policy. I am pretty excited about these policies I think they are going to be the industry standard when it comes to network based geolocation providers”.

A great thing is that you won’t have to install an add-on in order to make geolocation functional. You will have, of course, the chance to give your permission before your location is shared with a website, which means that the service is entirely optional.

But how does the service work? Well, the first thing you should know is that whenever you go to a website that is location-aware, the browser will ask you, just like I said earlier, if you are willing to share your location or not. If you do, then Firefox is ready to gather all sorts of information with regard to the access points that are placed nearby and to the IP address of your computer. The information is then sent by Firefox to Google Location Services, in order to obtain an estimate of the real location, which is further shared with the website.

A very important aspect is that users will be able to enjoy the geolocation feature when using the Firefox 3.5 Beta 4 for desktop computers also. As far as the Firefox for Windows Mobile, the alpha version is expected to be released in the near future, while the beta one is said to come sometimes in the summer.

Orange mobile phone available in UK

It seems that this is the remembrances day because it’s the second time for me to ask you to remember a cell phone that I told you about in the recent past. First it was the Samsung Trance, now it’s the Orange Vegas. Now, if you managed to bring the information about it in the present, then you must already know that Vegas is another affordable phone, a touchscreen one, that appeared in the spotlight a month ago or so.

The point is that the United Kingdom is the first country to enjoy the presence of the Vegas in the shop windows. The phone works on a dual band GSM/GPRS and features a 2.4 inch TFT display (a touchscreen one, as I said), a 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth (because it’s a must these days), an MP3 player, FM radio, 64MB of internal memory and the possibility for you to increase it with no more than 1GB.

As you can see for yourselves, the new Orange mobile phone is a basic one and wasn’t designed to impress customers for its features. You can buy the device from Orange for only £48.50 (which means approximately $71), being a Pay As You Go phone. And you can choose from two color versions, black and pink. What you should know is that the pink version will be exclusively sold by Orange.

Unfortunately, this is available only in the United Kingdom, but it is expected to start selling in other Orange markets also.

Chinese cell phones for policemen

In general, policemen and other public authorities are part of a privileged category, due to the fact that they can use all sorts of “weird” devices and gadgets. And when I say weird I’m thinking about handsets that are based on advanced technologies that wouldn’t have crossed anyone’s mind.

And here is something that it seems it was designed especially for the Chinese police by the Beijing –based company QiGi Future Technology. The phone is called AK007 and we don’t know if the 007 has something to do with James Bond, the best known secret agent of all times.

The device comes with impressive features, such as a 2.8 inch display with a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels, a 2 megapixel camera which can be used to capture the incriminating evidences, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, the GPS navigation which is meant to help the user easily find his/her way and a quad band (850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz).

The 2500 mAh battery is expected to provide up to 200 minutes of talk time and approximately 180 hours of stand-by time.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

On the other hand, the phone is equipped with a Marvell PXA310 624MHz applications processor, an NXP 5209 baseband processor, 128MB of RAM, 256MB of flash and a microSD card slot for expandable memory of no more than 8GB.

Compared to the Chinese people, it seems that the Ministry of Public Security prefers the devices based on the Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system, as the AK007 runs on it. The phone comes in a ruggedized case that measures no more than 4.44 x 2.67 x 0.62 inches and weighs approximately 3.88 ounces. In addition, the AK007 has bumpers all around the edges that are resistant to damages.

Unfortunately (or not, ‘cause, if we think about it, it’s none of our business) we don’t know how much the Chinese cell phones will cost the authorities. But it’s a curiosity.

Nutec wrist watch cell phone

One of the main attractions that were presented at the 2009 edition of the Consumer Electronics Show was undoubtedly the LG GD910 watch phone. People were amazed by the device and, as expected, more and more companies thought that such a concept would be perfect for the present market. This is why they hurried to be the first to release a similar cell phone, before the official release of the LG GD910, of course.

A relevant example is the Nutec WristFone, created by the Canada-based company called Neutrano. This one showed its face at CTIA, after Neutrano joined forces with Chinese OEMs in order to import some of the wrist watch cell phones, to tweak and certify them.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

As for the features, they will include GSM support, Bluetooth connecitivty, an 1.3 megapixel camera, handwriting recognition, touchscreen display, FM radio, voice recorder, an internal memory of 512 MB and the possibility for the user to expand the memory with the help of the SD card support.

Maybe the features list isn’t what you’ve hoped for, being far from your expectations, but I’m sure that this isn’t everything. Anyway, the point is that Neutrano said that the wrist watch cell phone is prepared to be released in mid-June. And rumors say that the Nutec will be available in several color versions, but this is, like I already said, just a rumor for the moment.
