General Mobile DSTL1, an Android-based dual SIM cell phone

The rumors about the Google operating system designed for mobile phones have created sensation since the first day they were launched and they came to a head when the T-Mobile G1 became a dream come true.

You know that an Android-based cell phone is, indeed, one of the most powerful desires of manufacturers worldwide, but it’s not like anyone who dares to dream is also capable of bold actions. However, it seems that more and more companies are eager to design such handsets, and the same happened with General Mobile, which you haven’t heard about it (and it’s quite ok, ‘cause it’s not like many people have), being an unknown player in the realm of mobile phones.

Rumors say that General Mobile is preparing one hell of a surprise for those who are waiting for the next Android-based mobile phone. The company is expected to present a dual SIM cell phone, powered by the Google mobile operating system, at the Mobile World Congress 2009, which is to be held in February.

The DSTL1 Imaginary lacks the 3G connectivity, which is a great disadvantage, but it features, among others: a 3 inch TFT display (manufactured by Sharp) with a resolution of 240 x 400 pixels, a 5 megapixel camera equipped with autofocus which is also Sharp-branded, Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP and EDR, FM radio with RDS, a 624MH Marvell processor, an internal memory of 4GB and a microSD card slot. The phone provides up to 240 minutes of talk time and up to 150 hours of stand-by time.

Taking into consideration the fact that there were other attempts already to release an Android-based cell phone which were taken to the level of promises, we shouldn’t get very excited with this dual SIM cell phone. If you remember, for example, the Kogan Agora, then you must know that many similar devices are still… imaginary.

Streaming-music-to-cell-phone software

To tell you the truth, I didn’t really know what in earth Spotify was, or at least not until I ran into an article related to it. Finding myself in the position of not knowing anything about this streaming music service, I made some research and I found out that “is a Sweden-based proprietary music streaming program which allows listening to specific music without delay via browsing artists, albums or created playlists”. Therefore, Europeans might be more familiar with it compared to others.

Gustav Söderström, the guy who was Director of Product Management and then Director of Business Development at Yahoo, for a couple of years (two, to be more precise), decided to leave the famous company because he had something else in his mind. Meaning Spotify.

Talking about its product, Gustav Söderström says that he enjoyed the most unbelievable reaction coming from the people he knew that got the chance to use Spotify. And the surprise was generated by the fact that the service actually worked. The whole point of Spotify is that there is no need for you to store millions of songs that are available nowadays, because you’re now given the possibility to listen to your favorite music even if it’s not stored on your hard drive. There is only one thing that you are supposed to do: to just create and keep playlists with the songs you love most and get connected with the outer world.

Now, as you all know, more and more people become addicted to their mobile phones. So, the next logical step in the development of this streaming music software is to make it work with cell phones. And, according to Gustav Söderström’s confession (which can be read on his blog), his team has already made the plans for working on the Spotify Mobile version which is said to get started sometime in February. In the given context, you probably imagine that there are no additional details as far as the availability is concerned.

Therefore, this is all we know about this new streaming-music-to-cell-phone software. But we’ll be back with further information.

Windows Mobile 6.5 expected to release this summer

For those who don’t know what Windows Mobile is, I’m sure you are familiar with Wikipedia and the statute it has in the virtual world, of a genuine wonder maker that is able to answer any question that you might have. So, “Windows Mobile is a compact operating system combined with a suite of basic applications for mobile devices based on the Microsoft Win32 API”.

If you are one of those who are waiting for the next generation of the Windows Mobile operating system, being sick and tired of the 6.1 version, then you will most certainly celebrate the news I’m about to give you. The brand new Windows Mobile 6.5 is expected to become available starting this summer, which means that the third quarter of 2009 will be the beginning of a new era.

Microsoft is said to deliver the operating system to handset manufacturers, but up until that moment the Windows Mobile 6.5 will make its debut during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) which will take place in Barcelona, between 16 and 19 February. The event will be, in fact, the official announcement of the new operating system.

If you are interested in the specifications of the 6.5 version, I’m afraid you will have to be patient, because there is little information on the novelties Microsoft is preparing for its customers. Nevertheless, there are two images that people can find on the Internet that leaked at the end of the last year, sometime in November.

Now, what people are curious about refers to what mobile phones manufacturers will be the first to release Windows Mobile 6.5-based devices, as we’re talking about a genuine privilege of using this highly-anticipated operating system. Unfortunately, famous companies like Samsung, LG or Sony Ericsson will just have to wait, armed with tons of patience.

Barack Obama phone for the Africans

As any other non-American human being, I’ve closely kept my eyes on the presidential election that took place at the end of last year in the United State. To my surprise, the event ended with an unexpected victory, but not because people didn’t want for such a thing to happen, but because it seemed impossible. A compulsory demand was for Americans to be open-minded and more courageous than ever. And they’ve proven themselves to be prepared for the change and enthusiastic about it. And Barack Obama at the White House is a picture that crowns it all, to the worldwide satisfaction.

And if you’re one of the millions of people that still celebrate the stunning victory of Barack Obama, then I’m sure you’d love to have an Obama-branded cell phone of your own. The only problem with such a desire is the fact that the phone I’m talking about was recently launched in the African continent, more precisely in Kenya. If you’re wondering about the reason why Kenya and not the United States, you should know that this is the country where the father of Obama was born. So it’s a reason good enough, right?

The Barack Obama phone was released under the name of Mi-Obama, being produced and commercialized by Mi-Fone, a company that most of you aren’t familiar with, unless you’re a person who had the chance to get in touch with the Asian and African markets.

As you can see in the picture, the back of the case has name of the president written on it and the words he used to repeat all over the campaign: “Yes we can”. The candybar is a basic phone, so don’t put your hopes too up, because you might be disappointed. The features include a display with a resolution of 128 x 128 pixels, FM radio and a LED torchlight.

It seems that another reason for the launch of the Barack Obama phone is the fact that the American President is expected to pay a visit in Kenya. “The coming of the new President of the USA is an auspicious moment for all Kenyans and the people of Africa. It is our pleasure to be able to launch the Mi-Obama phone as a memento that will always stay within the user’s hearts and minds”, said Alpesh Patel, Director of Mi-Fone. He further added that “the opportunity was just too good to miss”.

The Traveler, a new Pharos phone

The beginning of 2009 seems to be invaded by all sorts of new devices manufactured by companies eager to catch everyone’s attention and willing to become more famous that they already are. Pharos, for example, is a relevant example as far as the prolific companies are concerned, as it has just unveiled a new cell phone, the Traveler 137. This is in fact a smartphone and it’s expected to be released in the first quarter of this year.

The magic number of the Traveler is the 3.5 that corresponds to the 3.5 inch VGA display, on the one hand, and to the 3.5G data, on the other one. The operating system that the new Pharos phone is based on is the Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, while other technical features include: the Qualcomm MSM 7201A 528 MHz processor, memory of 256 MB DDR SDRAM and 512 MB Flash ROM, GSM quad band 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz, EDGE / GPRS, Tri-band 3G 1700 / 1900 / 2100 MHz, 7.2 Mbps HSDPA (this if for the T-Mobile USA and for the European bands), Wi-Fi and A-GPS.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

The display is a 3.5 inch TFT LCD provided with touch panel and with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels and 65K colors while the 3 megapixel camera has picture and video capabilities. You also have the possibility to increase the internal memory of this Pharos phone with microSD slot support SDHC.

Measuring 4.60 x 2.40 x 0.51 inches and weighing 4.9 ounces, the phone comes with a 1380 mAh Li-ion rechargeable battery that provides up to 4 hours of talk time and up to 200 hours of stand-by time. Even if there is no official information about the price of this new smartphone, rumors say that it will hit the market under a price of approximately $600.
