Nokia Replacement Batteries
Posted by: CameraPhonesPlaza in Nokia
Nokia offers the possibility to replace some models of phone batteries, after over 100 customers have reported overheating during charging. "No serious injuries or property damage have been reported" say the officials, and they chose this replacement program as a part of the customer satisfaction section in their marketing policy. It is said that almost 46 million BL-5C batteries have been affected and Nokia officials have declared that they are aware of the problem and they will try to replace as many as batteries possible.

Various manufacturers produce more than 300 million BL-5C batteries, but only 1/6 of these batteries have been reported with overheating problems. This battery can be identified easily, because it has an "BL-5C" inscription printed on it, and each battery has a 26 character identification number which can also be verified on Nokia Website to see if it belongs to the category of batteries in the discussion. The models which are known to have inside a BL-5C battery are the following:
Nokia 1100, Nokia 1100c, Nokia 1101, Nokia 1108,Nokia 2118, Nokia 2255, Nokia 2272, Nokia 2275, Nokia 2300, Nokia 1110, Nokia 1112, Nokia 1255, Nokia 1315, Nokia 1600, Nokia 2112, Nokia 2300c, Nokia 2310, Nokia 2355, Nokia 2600, Nokia 2610, Nokia 2610b, Nokia 2626, Nokia 7610, Nokia N70, Nokia N71, Nokia N72, Nokia N91, Nokia E50, Nokia E60, Nokia 6175i, Nokia 6178i, Nokia 6230, Nokia 6230i, Nokia 6270, Nokia 6600, Nokia 6620, Nokia 6630, Nokia 6631, Nokia 6670, Nokia 6680, Nokia 6681, Nokia 6682, Nokia 6820, Nokia 6822, Nokia 3100, Nokia 3105, Nokia 3120, Nokia 3125, Nokia 6030, Nokia 6085, Nokia 6086 and Nokia 6108, and also these accessories: Nokia Wireless GPS Module LD-1W and 3W.

Li-Ion batteries are used in most models of mobile phones are these batteries when charged according to the manufacturer's instructions. Anyway, there are accidents which happen to occur and which cause overheating, and this means that the LiIon battery fails exothermically. Usually, these events lead to cell rupture and ejection of the electrolyte, which is flammable and can burst into flames. There have been reported cases in which the LiIon batteries in laptops and mobile devices have spontaneously self-heated and burst into flames, and the consequences were not very good for the customers.
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission launched a guideline which includes advice concerning usage of laptops and mobile phones, and indications for an optimum positioning of the laptop when functioning. There are 19 agencies, including the US Department of Transportation and China's Civil Aviation Main Authority which are working to address the LiIon battery issues.
As an alternative to these problematic batteries, you can choose devices which use NiCd (Nickel Cadmium) and NiMh batteries, which don't contain flammable materials in their structure and seem to have a more robust thermal sensibility. On the other hand, you should know that Cadmium is toxic.
Analyzing these aspects presented, you can choose either to get a phone with a BL-5C battery and maybe suffer from its problems, or to get a mobile phone which isn't powered by LiIon batteries, and especially BL-5C model. If your mobile phone is powered by this type of battery, you can check on Nokia's website the terms of replacement process.
