NTT DoCoMo is known all over the world as the leading mobile carrier of Japan, its role being very important in the Japanese market as far as the mobile phone world is concerned. The provider has announced a brand new device that was developed from scratch following the “eco” trend. As the name suggests, Solar Hybrid (also known as SH-08A), the handset it powered by the sun.

This new cell phone is the newest member of the STYLE series, which has the DoCoMo brand, and offers the customers two different ways to charge it up. This means you can either charge it with electricity or using the light provided by the sun. It seems that it will take you no more than 10 minutes to charge the phone for a talk time of only one minute.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

The Solar Hybrid is equipped with an impressive list of features, part of them coming from the high-end side, such as a 3.0 inches main display with 16 million colors and a resolution of 480 x 854 pixels, HSDPA 7.2 Mbps, an 8 megapixel camera with autofocus and a microSDHC card slot for expandable memory of no more than 16 GB.

The phone is a creation of Sharp, the company that built it, so it’s also resistant to water. As a matter of fact, the new green cell phone is equipped with the IPX5 and IPX7 specifications. The handset is expected to start selling sometime during September, in three different colors: blue, green and white. Unfortunately, we don’t know the price right now.

Even if everyone is talking about the financial crisis that is going to turn our lives into nightmares if we don’t pay enough attention to what we do in the next couple of months (some say years, which is even more frightening), companies are still interested in the technological progress. After all, the world must go on, no matter what.

This is why NTT DoCoMo, the largest mobile carrier from Japan, has just made an announcement, concerning new developments in mobile phone technology. These developments consist of a “highly efficient mobile spatial audio transmission technology” that is designed to help people using a mobile phone to associate a sound source with a spatial position. This is possible when the users are listening to several sound sources, when they are at a game, for example, or during a conference call.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

“The technology enables a user listening with headphones to, for example, hear each speaker’s voice as if it were coming from a unique direction, creating a virtual face-to-face communication environment”.

The efforts aren’t in vain, or at least this is what NTT DoCoMo hopes. This is why they try to push things a little bit further, planning to commercialize the results of the research under the form of applications that are envisaged to include mobile conference calls, online games and, why not, tele-education.

DoCoMo will have the chance to demonstrate the new spatial audio transmission technology on HT-01A devices, which are part of the DoCoMo PRO series, at an event that will take place on May 12 and 13 at Pacifico Yokohama, called Wireless Technology Park 2009.

Can you hear the sound of drums? Well, if not, try to imagine it, because this is how you’ll be able to feel the excitement of this piece of news I’m about to share with you. As I said it many times before, the Android platform has been a great success even before being launched in the market and providers from all over the world were very interested in selling Android-based devices, which meant that the main objective of Google was accomplished.

Because you know how they say: if you’re talked about, you do exist. And NTT DoCoMo announced that they are ready to release the first Android cell phone to ever come in Japan sometimes this year. But you know very well how unpredictable these companies can be and how they can change their plans from a day to another.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

However, this is not the case, because NTT DoCoMo is expected to soon release the HTC Magic, which you probably know under the name of T-Mobile G2 or MyTouch 3G. Only this time it will be called HT-03A.

As expected, the device will run on the Android 1.5 operating system, which is highly talked about these days, as it has just been announced for the American market, via T-Mobile. We don’t have at our disposal exact information about the release date or the phone’s price, but it doesn’t matter, after all. What’s important is that HTC Magic will be the first Android cell phone to come in Japan.

Fujitsu has just announced that its new cell phone, the F-01A, “the world’s first fingerprint-enabled waterproof cell phone”, will be exclusively sold by NTT DoCoMo, the most important Japanese phone operator.

The phone is equipped with advanced features such as the fingerprint sensor (the first to use such a technology, by the way), which is called TouchStone, designed and developed by AuthenTec. More than that, the F-01A comes with the TrueNav technology which is to be used for a navigational control similar to the touchpad.

As far as the features are concerned, they include: the Symbian operating system, a 3.5 inch widescreen VGA display (which is also touch sensitive), a 5.2 megapixel camera which comes equipped with Autofocus, an integrated GPS that works in combination with the Mobile Google Maps (with the Street View), e-wallet mobile payment capability and a 1seg mobile TV tuner.

There are approximately 9 million cell phones based on the AuthenTec sensor available today on the market. This technology is meant to increase the privacy of the user, which is possible by “securing the device’s personal and corporate data”, such as emails, photos and contact lists.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

“We’re pleased to now offer this unique waterproof mobile phone which combines next generation, all-inclusive entertainment with the convenient security of an AuthenTec fingerprint sensor in the new docomo PRIME series phone”, said Katsumi Takada, general manager for the Mobile Phone Group of Fujitsu Limited. In addition, he said that “users of the new F-01A not only enjoy the peace of mind offered by its waterproof capability but also by the integrated fingerprint security which helps protect its stored files and personal information”.

The F-01A is waterproof, being compatible with IPX5 and IPX7 specifications. Therefore, it’s submersible to up to one meter, for no more than 30 minutes. Pretty good, right?

Usually, mobile phones and smartphones that are manufactured in Japan for the Japanese market don’t go outside this country’s boundaries, even if there would be lots of potential customers in other countries. I don’t quite the reason understand the reason why something like this happens, but that’s the way things go, so we should leave them this way.

Still, it seems that someone is trying to change the present situation, and we’re talking about NTT DoCoMo and Fujitsu Limited, that have just announced the release of a handset on the Taiwanese market. This is based on the FOMA F905i model that is already available in Japan. You can find this clamshell under the name of F905i, being sold by Far EasTone Telecommunications Co., Ltd. (also known as FET).

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

This is the first collaboration between DoCoMo and Fujitsu that resulted with a product that was designed for a market different from the Japanese. The F905i gives its users the possibility to view and use the Traditional Chinese character set, which is the writing system Taiwanese use. In addition, the phone is provided with access to i-mode, the mobile Internet service offered by FET.

The features of the F905i are quite impressive and they include: a 3.2 inch WVGA display (which can be positioned in two ways, as you can see in the picture), a 3.2 megapixel camera and the proprietary technologies of Fujitsu designed for clear sound and voice reproduction.

If you wonder why DoCoMo has decided to team up with FET (which is also a member of the Conexus Mobile Alliance, founded by DoCoMo, among other mobile operators from Asia-Pacific), then wait until you find that these two companies are “strategic partners”. So it doesn’t seem such a surprise, anymore, does it?

CEATEC 2008, Japan, seems to be the perfect place to get in touch with world’s latest inventions in technology. The event is highly expected worldwide because it gives manufacturers the chance to reveal the results of their work and receive answers from participants.

NTT Docomo Inc. amazed the public by introducing a concept cell phone that doesn’t follow the rules of cell phones as we have known them so far. The exhibited prototype of the “Separate Keitai” can be split in two pieces, the display and a keyboard segment. Yes, don’t be so surprised, everything’s possible! And this mobile phone’s key operation part can be separated from the display part as it was shown at CEATEC.

The handset gives users the chance to make a call while doing other stuff, like reading an email or checking their electronic schedule. Moreover, users can even use the separate unit as an MP3 player. The prototype has the same shape as regular foldable mobile phones, but what makes is distinguish itself from any other similar handsets is the fact that the operation part and the display part are synced with each other through a magnet, and they can be detached by only using a small force. This way, both of the parts have their individuality very well defined and can be operated and viewed when they are separated. However, the prototype had its two parts joined via Bluetooth wireless connection.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

The surprise doesn’t end here, though: the touchscreen reacts to the way the users are holding it. For example, when the two parts are vertically attached, you can see on the operation part a numeric keypad that helps you make a call. When, on the other hand, they are horizontally joined, the operation part displays a character entry screen. The company said that in this position the horizontal function can be turned into a gamepad for some mobile video game action.

For other applications, the display part can be used as a music player while having your operation part stored in a bag. In addition, precisely like exchangeable covers that people know from cell phones, there will be available a wide variety of combinations of display parts and operation parts. This means that when a user is running, for example, you can use a wristband type display and not the normal display.

NTT Docomo wasn’t the only company who exhibited the Separate Keitai, as Fujitsu Ltd showcased also the concept phone. I’m positive about the fact that many of those who get to see the phone would like one for themselves. Unfortunately, the company said that “this is a concept model so we have not decided a schedule for practical application”. This is bad news, isn’t it?

Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies (an event which is also known as CEATEC) is a trade show held every year in October, in Makuhari Messe, Japan, since the first edition, the one which took place in 2000. The event is said to be the Japanese equivalent of International Consumer Electronics Show, a similar show which takes place in Las Vegas, Nevada, and is not open to general public.

This year’s CEATEC edition has brought several remarkable inventions, more than the last couple of years combined, and the latest product NTT Docomo decided to unveil at the event does no more, no less than to continue the trend. The company is very well known for gripping the Japanese cell phone market and for recently losing the rights to the Apple’s iPhone in favor of SoftBank, which seemed to be the perfect solution, despite the fact that Docomo has a powerful network and enjoys significant brand recognition, locally speaking.

NTT Docomo Inc revealed, therefore, the prototype of a mobile phone that is designed to double as a video projector. The demonstration was made during the CEATEC 2008 event.

The company used for this handset its existing model which was integrated within an ultrasmall projector. Red, green and blue LEDs are used as a light source. In addition, the device features a “DLP Pico” chipset (( DLP stands for digital light processing) designed by Texas Instruments Inc. and it’s actually a DMD (digital micromirror device) with a reduced size for mobile use, its driver LSI and so forth. The projector has 480 x 320 pixels (HVGA) and a luminance of 7.5m, meanwhile the power consumption of the projector module comes to 3W.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

The projector is designed to screen a 20-inch image from a distance of approximately 80 centimeters and to offer 100 minutes of operating time (once again, with approximation). It’s more than enough to watch a TV show, podcast, or a short film. As I was saying before, a demonstration took place at the event. The handset projected images and its integrated Li-Ion secondary battery was being charged in the same time. The projector functioned during this test for only 15 to 20 minutes per charge. The reason for something like this to happen is that an existing battery for mobile phones was used.

In order to get this new handset to mass production there must be done some retouches. First of all, it’s necessary to reduce the heat that the projector module, then the power consumption, the cost and, why not, the size of the projector module.

It’s a great concept, there’s no doubt about it, but would it see the light of the day? I don’t know about you, but the company is confident in the success the projector will score, and plans to mount it after three years at earliest, “but only in the highest-end models”.
