Three co-branded rugged cell phones coming next year

Several days ago I was writing about Sonim XP3 Enduro, a handset that helped the family of rugged cell phones to extend. Going way beyond the success of that certain moment, the company decided that moving on is probably the best thing that anyone could do. Therefore, Sonim Technologies has just announced their latest partnership, with Land Rover, the famous British vehicle manufacturer. This is a sign of unceasing efforts and impressive growth. I don’t know the impact this partnership will have on Land Rover’s sales, but there’s no doubt about the fact that Sonim will take advantage of this initiative.

The collaboration has a bold purpose, to design and develop three new co-branded resistant handsets that are expected to go on sale starting next year. Two of those handsets are already in work, the Land Rover S1 and the Land Rover S2 G4 that were said to be launched in the first half of 2009. As far as the third one is concerned, it doesn’t have a name for the moment and it will probably hit the market until the end of 2009. The companies have great hopes about their partnership and they expect to make several deals with top operators, to help them spread the rugged cell phones in more than 40 countries.

The three devices will closely follow the Sonim Enduro’s features, although they won’t be as tough as their predecessor. However, expect the devices to be able to withstand harsh conditions, such as salt, fog, humidity, shocks provoked by thermal factors or by the transport. More than that, you can always “drown” your cell phone, as they’re completely submersible, or throw them from an altitude of approximately 1.6 meters. Imagine that you can also exercise your creativity, throwing it from any angle you might want to choose and the Sonim cell phone will be just fine. All good things must come to an end, and so does the features-list, as there isn’t more information available about what this company is preparing.

Sonim XP3 Enduro, a rugged cell phone that goes underwater

Sonim Technologies announced a couple of days ago that their family of rugged phones will extend with their latest addition, which will be known under the name of the Sonim XP3 Enduro. The device is said to be the successor of XP1, but maybe more important than this, the phone is also claimed to be one of the toughest GSM phones that are now available on the market.

The Sonim XP3 is an indestructible cell phone, as tough as a mobile phone can get, and can withstand more shocks and drops than its predecessor. More than that, the handset can be fully submersed for 30 minutes up to a meter deep. Not to mention the fact that the device is also certified to behave itself when it comes to a drop to concrete from as high as 2 meters. Pretty good, right?

The XP3 features an IP-57 protection rating and is also equipped with a 810F Military grade rating for salt, fog, humidity, transport and thermal shock. Redefining the term “rugged”, the phone’s buttons (the keyboard, more precisely) is meant to function very well, even beyond 500,000 pushes. The Sonim XP3 was designed to be capable of operating as long as it’s needed, if the temperatures are somewhere between -20C and +60.

This rugged cell phone comes equipped with 1180 mAh battery, which is more powerful than the one of the previous Sonim handset, and with another important feature, which is the option to synchronize the phonebook with MS Outlook. This is one option you couldn’t find on the XP1 and that is now available!

You must admit that Sonim XP3 isn’t a very “rich” device, as far as the features are concerned, taking into consideration the fact that they are modest in comparison with ones of a regular phone. Still, they’re satisfactory for a rugged handset. Therefore, it has tri-band GSM/GPRS connectivity (900/1800/1900 MHz), a 128x160 pixels display with 65k colors, 3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth 1.2 and WAP 2.0. Measuring 118.8 x 56.3 x 24.6 millimeters and weighing 140 grams, the device provides up to 220 hours of stand-by time and up to 5.5 hours of talk-time.

The Sonim XP3 is expected to be released in the near future, meaning November 2008, in European countries like Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the UK. The price is estimated at approximately 290 euro (around $370) after taxes and subsidies. On the other hand, rumors say that, right in time for the Christmas holiday, Vodafone UK will make this device available, so that the new rugged cell phone will be yours for free if you get yourself a contract agreement.

Sonim Technologies from US has announced its latest mobile phone called Sonim XP1 that will be launched in Europe at the World’s Toughest Phone Tour, an event that started on December 3 in Stockholm.
The phone’s specs include an IP-54 certification, mil-specs approval, and Bluetooth and Push-To-Talk support.
Nothing special.

Until now.
This is not an ordinary mobile phone with the latest built-in technologies, it is an innovative high-end device, designed for hard sports enthusiasts and workers in extreme environments.
This phone is all-resistant, and I mean it! It resists at shocks, dust, water, wind, dirt extreme temperatures, and so on.

The Indestructible Phone: Sonim XP1

To demonstrate this, the producing company, SonimTech, is sending a new XP1m to bloggers and journalists, along with the invitation to test the phone.
”If you’re standing on a construction site with a welding tool in your hand, or are sitting in a catamaran with a hard wind in your face, you really don’t need a fashion accessory nor a multimedia monster, you need a dependable working tool like the new XP1, built for extreme conditions,” says Bob Plaschke, the CEO of Sonim. ”The Sonim XP1 doesn't die when exposed to the elements, can be dropped, kicked, tossed into a toolbox or backpack, seen and heard in bright/dark and noisy conditions, and provides reliable voice, push-to-talk and data services.”

To convince you, I will let you know that the company offers the phone with an unconditional 3-year warranty for the internal elements and a LIFETIME WARRANTY for the housing.

And if you're not 100% convinced i will show you this car test movie.
Enjoy and don’t forget to leave your reactions in a comment!
