These days, cell phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs) have become more than indispensable tools for the highly mobile workforces. Such devices, small and relatively inexpensive, can be used for an extended range of functions, including sending and receiving electronic mail, storing documents, delivering presentations, and remotely accessing data. Even though they provide increased productivity benefits, these devices also bring new risks for organizations.
<-300×250 Medium Rectangle – center->
You can find quite a large quantity of information about the threats and the associated technology risks, and also the available safeguards to mitigate them. Especially organizations can use this information to increase security and reduce the incidents involving cell phone and PDA services. Lately, these devices can be used not only for voice calls, simple text messages but also for Personal Information Management (PIM), such as phonebook, calendar and notepad and an extended range of functions usually performed at a desktop computer. These functions include sending and receiving electronic mail, browsing the Web, storing and modifying documents, delivering presentations and remotely accessing data. Cell phones as mobile handled devices also possess specialized built-in hardware, like cameras, Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, and reduced-size removable media card slots, employing a wide range of wireless interfaces. Also includes a Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi), Bluetooth and more types of cellular interfaces.

Because of their small size the usage outside the office, these handheld devices can be easier to misplace or to get stolen than a laptop or notebook computer. The problem is that if these devices fall on the wrong hands, gaining access to the stored information or accessing remotely data can be relatively easy.

The communication networks, desktop synchronization and storage media can be the means of delivering malware to handled devices. Malware is very often disguised as a game, device patch, utility or some other useful third-party application that might be available for download. Users must be careful, because once installed malware can initiate a range of attacks and spread itself on other devices.

Especially cell phones and PDAs ca be the subject to spam, including text messages and voice mail to the additional electronic mail. Deleting spam can be inconvenient and charges might apply for inbound activity.

Organizations are encouraged to make decisions about configuring mobile handheld devices securely and consistently, when developing and following a well-designed implementation. Developing such plans would help identifying critical issues and guiding administrators in making correct decisions between usability, performance, and risks. The issues organizations should focus on, are system contingency, continuity of operations, and disaster recovery plans.

Organizations must ensure that handheld devices are deployed, configured and manages, in order to meet the company`s security requirements and objectives. Many cell phone security issues can be avoided with an appropriate configuration. Usually, the security configuration guides or checklists (if available) can assist administrators to provide security for systems, consistently and efficiently.

Cell phone and PDA security generally includes the following steps: applying available critical patches and upgrading the operating systems; eliminating or disabling unnecessary services and applications; installing and configuring additional needed applications; configuring user authentication and accessing controls; configuring resource controls. Absolutely necessary are the installment and configuration of additional required security controls, including content encryption, remote content erasure, firewall and antivirus, intrusion detection, antispam, and virtual private network software. Of course, the permanent performance of security testing.

As you probably already know, Japan’s gadget design trends are the most amazing. You can find there colorful designs with various shapes, some with Swarovski crystals encrusted and even gold phones with diamonds. Pink cell phones are on the top positions in sales and the representative brand is the famous Hello Kitty loved even by adults.

If you are not in Asia and need to find cell phones for children it’s a little bit hard. I can tell you this because I also tried to find at least a few models to choose from but all I’ve found were 3 old phones from 2005, and they didn’t even look cool enough for a child to like it.

Fortunately I’ve discovered at ThinkGeek.com.
2 impressively small cell phones for adults but because of their dimensions I could recommend them as cell phones for children too. Besides these, they provide the latest technologies such as touchscreen and this is a very important aspect if we talk about easy of use and ergonomics if you like.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

The first one was announced in a recent press release and it is called the Neon 7 Mini Touchscreen Cell Phone, and when they say it’s a mini, believe me, it’s among the smallest cell phones I’ve seen.
Imagine holding in your hand a 95 X 42 X 11 mm GSM handset with an extremely slim design measuring just 11 mm thick, but with features like touch-sensitive 1.9-inch TFT LCD display of 65K colors, heat sensitive keys, MP3/MP4 player for music and videos, stereo Bluetooth, email support, virtual on-screen full keyboard, a talking menu with intelligent call alert, meaning the phone tells you who is calling by reading the incoming number out loud thanks to the speech synthesis technology, and hand writing recognition. This sounds too much! All these in a tiny mobile phone!

And if I tell you that it integrates also a 1.3MP CMOS camera with video recorder and webcam functionalities what would you say?

The Neon 7 Mini Touchscreen Cell Phone from ThinkGeek.com has extended T-Flash a lot support, Speakerphone, image editor, ringtone composer, WAP, organizer, world clock, calendar, to-do list, stop watch, phonebook and even health checker!! So you child would have various stuff to play with but maybe too much for his/her needs!

At just $199.99 the bar phone comes with an ear bud headset, 2 batteries, the AC travel charger, the USB cable, 2 styluses and the manual.

The other cell phone for children I want to show you is the Mini Boombox GSM Cell Phone available at a price of $149.99 at the same ThinkGeek.com online store.

This 3.5 x 1.3 x 0.8 inches model has a sliding keypad and comes in white. It looks cool and besides that it features MP3 player, tri-band support, GPRS, amplified speakers, SMS group, video player, WAP browser, Speakerphone, voice synthesis technology like the previously described cell phone, 256MB internal memory expandable up to 2GB, USB connectivity, a built-in 1.3MP CMOS camera with camcorder function, video recorder, and sports a 1.5-inch TFT LCD display of 65K colors.
Same as the Neon 7 Mini Touchscreen Cell Phone, it comes with 2 Li-Ion batteries, travel AC charger, stereo headset, USB cable and the user manual.

Here’s the Century Sutra 1688 gaming phone from China. It includes pre-installed super nitendo emulator and a game pad to let you use the phone as a portable gaming machine and, what’s more interesting is that the gamepad is included in the retail package. The game pad uses
a cable to connect to the mobile phone and the handset can be slotted in the middle of the game pad. Beside the 1500 games you get in the retail package, you can also use a microSD card to store other games.

The Century Sutra 1688 also features a dual sim card slot, dual loud speaker, a 1.3 megapixel camera at the back, and a 0.3 megapixel camera at the front (don’t be fooled, no 3G, the front camera is only for taking pics of yourself probably)

The phone is already available in China for $125.

Ever wondered how the phone of the future will look like? We surely did. Phone producers show us every year some really superb concept phones and even if 99% of those phones never see the production line they give us a small glimpse of what the phones will look like in a not so distant future. We’ve made a list of what we think are the coolest concept phones presented in the last year. This is not a top, so the order is random. Oh, and one more thing, remember, these are concept phones, which means they are not in production and are not for sale, so please don’t ask us where can you can get and what’s the price. So, here it goes:

1. Nokia 888 Communicator

<-125x125 Button - left->
Nokia definitely has the most interesting concept phones. Nokia 888 Communicator is a striking futuristic concept phone. The phone, which uses liquid batteries, speech recognition, flexible touchscreen and touch-sensitive body cover,is designed by Tamer Nakisci and won the Nokia Design Award. We also have a video presentation made by Nokia.

2. Nokia Aeon

Nokia Aeon was presented by Nokia on their website in the Research & Development section. What is so great about this phone is that it looks like it will actually go into production next February. Of course, its just a rumor, but still, makes us hope to actually see it someday in the GSM shop. All we know about it for now is that its a touchscreen phone and it looks fantastic.

<img src="http://www.cameraphonesplaza.com/images/sky_sleek_slim.jpg" alt="Sky "Sleek & Slim" Concept Phone" />

“Sleek & Slim” from SKY is another concept based on touchscreen technology. The phone has a discretely glowing touchpad, hideaway keys and generally utterly-fashionable minimalist design.

4. Benq-Siemens Snaked

Benq designers thought of women too and presented Snaked. This is a “reptile” looking phone, creepy somehow, but still is very cool. The Snaked is a fashion phone for sport loving women, because it also has body monitoring sensors to help the ladies keep those fine shapes.

5. “What You See Is What You Get” Concept

One thing is for sure about this concept phone…they could’ve named it shorter. Designed by Pei-Hua Hang, the phone’s name comes from the fact that this concept no longer uses an LCD as viewfinder for the digital camera, instead it uses a transparent frame. And of course, interaction is made through a touchscreen.

6. Retroxis by Dark Label

If most phones presented here will never be sold in store for sure, the Retroxis concept phone from Dark Label looks kinda human, and makes us hope we’ll be able to get one of these one day. Designed by Lim Sze Tat the phone is encased in high polished polycarbonate renowned for its lightweight and toughness and has an invisible OLED display that silently hides away when inactive.

7. Benq-Siemens Black Box

Black Box designed by Benq-Siemens uses a touch screen as its keypad and, depending on the functions you are using, the touch screen changes the control layout immediately.

8. NEC Tag

Somehow similar to the Snaked concept, the NEC Tag is a flexible phone concept that can be , for example, hung from a belt or wrapped around the user’s arm. Interesting is that the phone has shape-memorizing material and sensors that allows the phone to change its shape according to the mode.

9. TripleWatch

Though the idea of a cellphone watch is not so new, the TripleWatch designed by Manon Maneenawa has an interesting triple flip technique that allows the user to transform the watch into a normal cellphone. When used as a wrist watch, the phone has a speaker button that allows the user to answer the phone and hang up while driving.

Its the case for Hulger’s Ziricote Luxury Wooden Phone which is a very sleek slider phone, but most major functions aside from dialing can be performed without needing to slide out the keypad. Of course, no info if it will ever go into production, which is too bad, because the phone really looks awesome.
