Motorola i850 rugged cell phone

A rugged cell phone is probably the best alternative that someone can choose from the wide variety of devices that we are constantly offered, because the environment can prove itself to be very nasty sometimes. And there’s no doubt about the fact that we don’t need a cell phone which decides to die when we least expect it.

Sprint decided to release a brand new version of an old model, the Motorola i850 iDEN, a rugged phone, which you can buy right away, just in case you’re interested in it.

It’s not difficult to see that “highly visible yellow” outfit of the new handset, as it’s a very powerful color that catches everyone’s attention. Talking about power, the battery is a 1130 mAh one, providing approximately 200 minutes of talk time, which is pretty good.

Besides these differences, compared to the old version, this rugged cell phone didn’t change very much, being also certified to Military Standard 810F, which means the yellow i850 is resistant to all sorts of factors, from shocks, vibration, dust or solar radiation to extreme temperatures, low pressure, rain, fog and humidity.

The features list of the Motorola i850 consists of the following: an 1.9 inch TFT internal display with a resolution of 176x220 pixels and 262k colors, a white STN external display with a resolution of 96x32 pixels, an 1.3 megapixel camera, GPS functionality, Bluetooth connectivity, MMS capabilities, Nextel Direct Connect, iDEN 800/900 MHz and microSD card slot for expandable memory.

The phone measures 3.8 x 2.2 x 1.1 inches and weighs no more than 5.1 ounces.

The yellow version of the Motorola i850 rugged cell phone is already available via Sprint and can be yours for $119. It’s just that you’ll have to sign a 2-year contract agreement for this price.

LG Rumor phone – exclusively from Sprint

The fact that the second generation of the LG Rumor phone is going to be sold via Sprint was well known by everyone, but what we all wanted to know was if the company will give the phone the official treatment one day. And that day has come.

Released under the name of LG Rumor 2, the device will be exclusively sold by Sprint in the United States, just like the older version. The Rumor 2 is aimed at those customers who are looking for affordable phones and who want to be permanently connected to the world outside.

The features list includes the following: a full QWERTY keyboard (which slides out), a QVGA TFT display with 262k colors, stereo Bluetooth connectivity, MP3 player, 1.3 megapixel camera, Sprint Navigation, which is aimed at enabling voice and on-screen, turn-by-turn directions, Sprint Mobile Email Work which comes with Microsoft Exchange Server and IBM Lotus Notes, additional removable backplate and a microSD card slot of no more than 16GB.

Measuring 4.4 x 2.1 x 0.7 inches and weighing 4.23 ounces, the LG Rumor phone provides up to 5.5 hours of talk time.

The original LG Rumor, launched two years ago, in 2007, became the best selling CDMA cell phone ever sold by Sprint, or at least one of them. This is why the North American carrier has great expectations about the new one.

“LG Rumor gives customers the benefits of Sprint’s Now Network on a phone that’s attractive and affordable, appealing to anyone who needs the ability to quickly send off a text or PictureMail”, said Kevin Packingham, the senior vice president of Product and Technology Development, at Sprint. “Staying connected to your family, office or even social networks has never been as easy and cost-effective as it is with the pairing of this device and Sprint’s Everything Messaging pricing plan. In today’s economic climate, it is great to know you don’t have to compromise to get a good value in wireless”.

The phone will be available in two color versions, Black Titanium and Vibrant Blue. The first one will start selling on March 15th, while the second one will hit the market on March 29th, both at www.sprint.com. LG Rumor will be found in all Sprint retail channels starting April 19th, for a price of $49.99, after a $50 mail-in rebate. For this to happen, you’ll have to sign a two-year service agreement.

Stature i9, the Motorola clamshell cell phone to be released by Sprint

Following the pattern of other cell phones, there were many rumors about i9, the Motorola clamshell phone that was very often talked about, even if the lack of information should have stopped everyone from making all sorts of wild suppositions. Nevertheless, we’ve reached the day when the handset has been given the official treatment and its full name will be from now on Motorola Stature i9.

The clamshell cell phone is expected to become available via Boost Mobile in no more than a couple of weeks (sometime by the end of this month) and then (a little bit later) via Sprint.

"Motorola Stature i9 is the latest example of our continuing commitment to our Nextel Direct Connect customers giving them best-in-class push-to-talk services on an incredibly attractive device," said Danny Bowman, the president of Sprint's iDEN business unit. In addition, he said that "Sprint has invested billions of dollars in the iDEN network, adding thousands of cell sites to bolster capacity and coverage. As a result, the network is performing at best-ever levels enabling customers using Stature or any of our iDEN devices to experience the speed of the fastest national push-to-talk network".

Instinct, the next pink Samsung mobile phone

Rumors said that Instinct is going to be the next pink Samsung mobile phone that is going to hit the market, but it was expected to become available sometime in February, just before the day that you’ve all been waiting for: the Valentine’s Day.

Proving itself to be anxious about this new release, Sprint, one of the largest American wireless telecommunications networks, has just announced “the immediate availability” of the Samsung Instinct, dressed in a pink outfit. The device is a great success for the provider, accounting approximately one-fifth of all handsets sold by Sprint, during the first two weeks that the Instinct was available.

“Instinct has been a great success for us from both a sales and innovation perspective”, said Kevin Packingham, Sprint SVP of Product Development. In addition, he said that “we are thrilled with our customer’s response to this dynamic, well-integrated and easy-to-use wireless phone. Bringing the price under $100 will make it even more accessible to customers who want the best of Sprint’s 3G network on a powerful touchscreen device”.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

You should know that as far as the features are concerned, this pink version of the Instinct won’t bring more novelties compared to the old device. Therefore, the only difference consists of the color. The features of the pink Samsung mobile phone include: Visual Voicemail that allows users to listen to their messages in the order they prefer, stereo Bluetooth 2.0, SMS voice and text messaging, HTML Web experience, a picture caller ID, a 2.0 megapixel camera with video recorder, microSD card for expandable memory of up to 8 GB.

Another great news about the pink Samsung mobile phone is the fact that it comes with an affordable price, at least for a limited period of time. More than that, the same goes for the black version of the device. Therefore, you can purchase your own Instinct handset for only $99.99, after a $100 rebate and a two year agreement. The Samsung Instinct is said to be available in Sprint stores from all over US, but if you won’t find it this way, you will find it online. That’s for sure.

Google Android is not good enough for Sprint

If you’re a Sprint customer and you’re anxious to put your hands on the first Android powered smartphone, here’s a little piece of advice: it would be a very good idea not to hold your breath while waiting, ‘cause you might have the most unwanted and unexpected surprise of them all. It looks like the CEO of Sprint is trying to stir up a little battle of words with Google and their Android, as apparently Sprint’s CEO, Dan Hesse, made a rather scathing comment to the National Press Club in Washington. Rumors say that Hesse doesn’t feel that Google Android is “good enough to put to Sprint brand on”, at least in its present form anyway.

We weren’t at the meeting, so we don’t precisely know the context for Sprint Nextel CEO Dan Hesse’s speech, but according to Reuters, this guy, whom you may remember from those classy black-and-white commercials on the TV, has recently revealed its position.

Sprint may be having a lot of problems marketing its own brand in the last few years, but according to Hesse, Google’s Android mobile operating system isn’t perfect either. Nevertheless, he said that a phone powered by Android will be sold by Sprint “at some time in the future”, as Sprint is part of the alliance of about 30 companies that said they would support Google’s development of a mobile phone operating system.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->
This is undoubtedly surprising, because other than Apple’s iPhone, which is exclusively sold by the much larger rival of Sprint, AT&T, for at least a few more years, Google’s Android project is probably the most important in the mobile industry and the only one people are actually excited about. Not to mention the success AT&T scored with the iPhone for some time, while other carriers such as Sprint suffer in the smartphone market. Sprint has to find and provide a real competitor to the iPhone. Ok, there are many other phones with touchscreen capability, like the Samsung Instinct, for example, but let’s face it, nothing compares to the almighty iPhone. To overcome this losing-customers situation, Sprint has to do something, anything, to attract people on its side.

Sprint has hoped to get an Android phone in its arsenal by the end of the year to compete with the iPhone at Christmas, as the Wall Street Journal reported in June, but because of these delays, it seems that the company won’t be launching the device after all. Not this holiday season, anyways.
