FDA has just approved the VX-5200 GlucoPhone model from HealthPia, in order to prove that people should make use of their mobile phones in a wide range of purposes and that these devices can combine many functions to make people's lives easier.
The GlucoPhone packs a blood glucose meter which is agreed to be its most important feature, compensating for its raw design and small display.
The glucose meter is set on the back of the phone and the test strip is to be stuck into a slot on the side. This works just as a regular glucose meter, but having the advantage that the user can always have it at hand, without carrying many devices. Furthermore, the phone is less bulky than other regular glucose meters, mainlu because it takes over most of the functions the other device used to pack. It also fits into many standards mobile phones, increasing its potential for further deployment.
Moreover, the user can send his results through a text message via an online database, making it easier for people to handle diabetes, which is also one of the reasons that this products has been developed.
The GlucoPhone is available for purchase on the market at an introductory rate of USD 150 and an extra USD 20 for each vial of 50 test strips.
