I could immediately think of a couple of persons who would never carry a cell phone larger than a RAZR, if I was asked by someone, anyone, to give examples of human beings who hate over-dimensioned devices, so the idea of consider something like the Motorola VC6096 smartphone is outrageous. No more, no less. As you can see in the picture below, the phone is at least two, if not even three, times the size of a Motorola Q. Ok, this is based on appearances, but I think that the estimate isn’t far from the truth.

But if you like your smartphone to look a little hefty, than check this one, an oversized Windows Mobile 6.1
“The VC6096 all-in-one cab solution is designed to help transportation and logistics providers achieve cost-effective compliance, maximize driver productivity, improve safety and vehicle utilization, reduce costs and improve customer service. Built to handle the rigors of the road, the device provides drivers with the comprehensive simultaneous wireless voice and data capabilities needed to maximize operational efficiency – including wireless WAN (WWAN), wireless LAN (WLAN), Bluetooth, GPS and telematics support”, we’re told on Motorola’s official website. Being an open-platform solution, the VC6096 gives you the power of choice and allows you to select and control the applications and peripherals that best meet your business needs.
As far as the features are concerned, they include: an integrated 3.5G GSM HSDPA WWAN that provides simultaneous voice and data , as well as 802.11a/b/g WiFi, a SiRFstar II GPS receiver which offers SAE J1708 and J1939 ports of communicating directly with the systems of whatever vehicle you mount in, Bluetooth v2.0, Class II, a 6.5 inch color high definition VGA resistive display (it’s touch sensitive, in addition) with a resolution of 640x480 pixels, a full backlit QWERTY keyboard, 65-key with tactile feedback and audible key back. Not to mention the five programmable soft keys.
Inside, the VC6096 hides 128MB of RAM plus 256MB of flash memory for storage, with a SD slot for up to 2GB expansion, and a 624 MHz XScale PXA270 processor, a faster version of the same chip we’ve seen before in other shop-minded portables. Not to mention the fact that it runs the Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional.
There is no information about the price and availability of this device, but this could easily turn into a must-have gadget for your fleet in 2009.
