N97

Over the last few years September has a new meaning. For people with passion for mobility the first days of September means Nokia World. This year, Nokia World was held in Germany, at Stuttgart. In 2009 Nokia seizes social Internet and amplifies music experience. As usual Nokia announced new gadgets: the Nokia N900, Nokia 5230, Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition, the recently revealed Nokia Booklet 3G and the highlight of the evening the N97 mini and the new Nokia X6.

Many people believed that N97 was the ultimate smartphones. Actually it was just the beginning. Now after a year we have the N900 and the Booklet 3G, two new gadgets that for Nokia represents how the world is changing. Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, CEO, Nokia, commented: "Nokia is driving this change".

The new N97 mini, was introduced because of, believed it or not, the new marketing of Apple. Apple has now the iPhone 3G at a lower price but also the iPhone 3Gs, newer, faster and more reliable. So why the new N97 mini? Well the N97, already sold in 2 million units, is expensive and quite large. The N97 mini brings all the good specs of N97, a tilting 3.2" touch display with orientation sensor and proximity sensor, QWERTY keyboard, 8GB internal memory (the N97 has 32 GB) with MicroSD memory card slot, hot swappable, up to 16GB, HSCSD, GPRS, WCDMA, HSDPA, WLAN IEEE 802.11 b/g and TCP/IP support. It also has capability to serve as data modem. It's operating frecuency are impressive Quad Band EGSM 850/900/1800/1900, WCDMA 850/900/1900/2100. A very good feature that was inherited from the older brother N97 is the 5 megapixel camera (2584x1938) with Carl Zeiss optics. The software is still S60 5th edition with Symbian OS version 9.4, therefore you can't expect to glide through the menu. Regarding the battery life, BL-4D 1200mAh-Li-lon battery, is not a very resourceful battery for such a powerful multimedia device.

Like Apple, Nokia is now focusing it's attention over the environmental features. Energy efficiency, eco content and service, materials, recycling, it seems like they really invests more time in making a new phone.

In the presentation of the new N97 mini, Nokia brought up the Ovi Store. Unfortunately the Ovi Store is not yet as functional as iTunes. It's less known even by Nokia owners and it lacks good marketing. Jonas Geust, Vice President of Nokia Nseries, commented: "People want to bring their physical and online worlds together via the internet". So the new Nokia N97 mini was designed for this new social internet. Basically Nokia invented Lifecasting to draw attention over this lifestyle. Lifecasting with Ovi will be available for both Nokia N97 and Nokia N97 mini using Nokia Beta Labs. There is more to expect from both of N97 because Nokia announced new software which will be released in October as a free update. The new software will bring among others new homescreen widgets and additional usability improvements. The Nokia N97 mini will begin shipping in October of 2009.
