Nautiz X5, a Windows Mobile-based rugged cell phone

When you hear about X5, you might think about something else, the mid-sized crossover SUV manufactured by BMW (don’t be surprised if searching the term “X5†on Google the first result will be the vehicle’s page on Wikipedia). But you’re far from the truth, so that you know. Anyway, there’s another word there, Nautiz, which might help not rushing up into conclusions.
Nautiz X5 is a rugged cell phone released by Handheld Europe, being, in fact, a PDA (personal digital assistant). The launch took place at CeBit in Hannover, Germany (3-8 March).

This is a full-featured device that comes with the Windows Mobile 6.1 platform, combining a set of impressive features that you won’t be able to find in many similar devices. Thomas Löfblad, the Managing Director of Handheld Europe, said: “The features of the Nautiz X5 are outstanding – customers will not find another computer with such advanced features in a rugged and value-priced package. The processing speed, 3G cellular communication, GPS and the camera in particular really offer our customers a combination they can’t find anywhere elseâ€.
Now, as far as the features are concerned, they include: 3G communication (HSDPA/EDGE), a 3 megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash, an integrated barcode scanner, WLAN, Bluetooth connectivity, GPS, SiRF star III GPS chip with InstantFix II, a powerful Marvell PXA320 Xscale 806MHz processor, a 3.5 inch TFT touchscreen with a resolution of 480 x 640 pixels, Wi-Fi, 256MB RAM, 512MB Flash memory and a microSD card slot.

The device measures 160 x 80 x 35.5 centimeters and weighs approximately 410 grams with the rechargeable 4400 MAh Li-ion battery included.
A great thing about it (which makes it rugged) is the fact that it can be used at extreme temperatures from -20 to +55 degrees Celsius, being dust and sand resistant. In addition, the Nautiz X5 supports multiple drops from heights that are no higher than 1.8 meters.
For the moment, the Nautiz X5 rugged PDA can be tested and reviewed, and will be presented at the CeBit event. Other information about pricing and availability isn’t yet available.
