Nokia Friend View whispers your friend’s hiding place

Nokia releases Nokia Friend View, the latest product designed by the Nokia Beta Labs, which is an experimental location and micro-blogging service that allows people to exchange information concerning their location: they can view, on one hand, the location of their friends, and to share their own location, on the other hands. This is a very easy way to feel close to your beloved ones.

Friend View consists of two major components: a mobile application and a web browser interface. What you should know is that the latter is mandatory if you want to enjoy the Nokia Friend View experience. The service is very simple: based on the GPS technology, it finds whatever location you might want (yours or your friends’) and when this functionality isn’t at your disposal, the location will be approximated with the help of the phone’s network.

Once you’ve installed the application and logged in, you can simply start by checking the Tips and Mini-help, which explains not only the features that are available from web or phone, but also the practical details, such as shortcuts and graphic indicators. This way, you will know if you are sharing your location with other people or not, if a location is precise or not, and so on. If you want to log in to the service you need to have a Nokia account, and if it’s not the case (meaning you already have one), the only thing you should do is to login with your Nokia account username and password to the service.

If you want to become active, meaning you want to start sharing photos or locations, you need to add friends and wait for them to accept you as a friend. Therefore, is all about good friends and people you most love in the whole world.

The Friend View has been tested on Nokia 5300 XpressMusic, 6110 Navigator, 6210 Navigator, N95, N95 8GB, N82, N76, E71 and E90 and is currently available for S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 1 and 2 phones. In addition, the application is also available for S60 3rd Edition (initial release) phones and has been tested on Nokia N80 and E61. Friend View also has a web browser interface that lets you follow up from home or elsewhere. So far, you can only download it if you use Mozilla Firefox or Safari, as Nokia is still working on adding support for Internet Explorer.

If you want to try Nokia Friend View mobile application, you can download it from its official website. Moreover, you can always give these guys a feedback, as they’re eager to listen to your thoughts and make Friend View better.

Hi! Thanks for the nice blog post about Friend View Maria :)
    Just a few comments:
    - you mention "start sharing photos..." > In the current version you can only upload photos as profile images (avatars). But you can share posts and locations
    - Now you can also use IE7 and very soon Nokia mobile browser as well ;)
    - also when you mention "but only the first one (mobile application) is mandatory". I have to step in here and say "NO" ;) You can use it perfectly well through only the web version, you can sign in and do anything that you can do from the phone instead, of course, get the automatic location. But instead you have to double click on the map to set your location manually. So using the phone version is only much more fun! but not a requirement ;)

And we surely love feedback! we've got quite good already and it's keeping us busy to make improvements!

Enjoy! And Greets from the Friend View Team
