Sony Ericsson Satio

The Sony Ericsson Satio was one of the most awaited phones of 2009. This Symbian smart phone with large touch screen manages to impress both by design, as well as by the features. The 12 megapixel camera is one of the best ones ever seen on a cell phone. Despite these enviable performances, the Sony Ericsson Satio failed to become very popular. Many other phones with similar features appeared and Sony Ericsson is not yet known for smart phones.

In terms of size, the phone fits very well into the normal smart phone category.  It has 112 x 55 x 13 mm in dimensions and a total weight of 126 grams. To maintain a normal weight for Satio, the manufacturer has chosen a resistant and high-quality plastic which is available in three colors (black, silver and Bordeaux) and it makes this phone very solid and very attractive.

The front side is dominated by a large 3.5 inch touch screen.  Above it, there is an ambient light sensor, a secondary camera for video calls and of course, the loudspeaker. Under the screen we have only three keys: Call and End keys, and Menu button. For such a large touch screen the Sony Ericsson Satio could not lack a proximity sensor. On the left side you will find a button for locking the display, a universal port (for attaching headphones, charger and connect to a PC via USB) and a microSD card slot.

On the right side you will find five buttons: two buttons for volume and zoom, a camera shutter, a button for opening the gallery and a key which helps you switch the camera shooting modes. The power button is placed on the top and on the bottom part the Sony Ericsson Satio has a speaker.

On the back of the phone you'll find an impressive 12 Megapixel camera which has a Xenon Flash and a LED Flash. The two small holes around the camera are designed for sensors that measures and adjusts image brightness during photo capturing or video recording. This camera is capable of taking pictures at a maximum resolution of 4000 x 3000 pixels and recording videos at a VGA resolution with a speed of 30 fps. The Sony Ericsson Satio has a 3.5 inch touch screen with a native resolution of 360 x 640 pixels. Supporting 16 million colors, this display makes the Satio an excellent smart phone. It offers superior image quality with a great contrast and brightness for a TFT display.

When it comes to connectivity, the Sony Ericsson Satio is equipped with GPRS, EDGE, 3G and HSUPA features for data transfer and many other high-end features like Wi-Fi, DLNA Bluetooth, TV-out, USB 2.0 and GPS. Sony Ericsson's web browser supports Flash and JavaScript Satio.

Powered by a powerful ARM Cortex A8 600 MHz, PowerVR SGX graphics processor and 256 MB of RAM memory, the Sony Ericsson Satio is capable of loading the pages quickly. The large screen is suitable for Internet use. I noticed however a problem when scrolling pages in the browser, running is not uniform. The browser can open multiple pages at once. He did well even with web pages that contain more flash applications.

To be a part of the top-smart phone category, the Sony Ericsson Satio comes with a standard Li-Pol 1000 mAh battery capable of keeping this cell phone on for up to 4 hours and 50 minutes of conversations (3G mode) and up to 340 hours in standby mode. Even if these values are a bit low, considering that this phone is equipped only with high-end technology and having a price of $479, this phone is one of the best in the entire world.

Nokia N Series Mobile Phones

Today, on the market, you can find a lot of mobile phone models, each being very powerful and having a lot of technology features. The Nokia N Series mobile phones are the best handsets in the world being the result of a combination between a multimedia cell phone with a business class smart phone.

One of the Nokia N Series mobile phones which shocked the world being equipped only with top-technology features is the Nokia N70. With a case made of top-quality paint in a great combination between silver and black and a high-quality construction, this cell phone is very attractive. The Nokia N70 comes equipped with a 2.0 Megapixel camera, a 2.1 TFT display (with a native resolution of 176 x 208 pixels) and 22 MB of internal memory (which can be extended up to 8 GB with a RS-DV-MMC card). Powered by a TI OMAP 1710 220 MHz processor and having a Symbian OS 8.1a, Series 60 UI interface, the Nokia N70 is capable to run applications quickly without lag.

If you want to have a cell phone which can replace a digital camera and even a video-camera, you can choose the Nokia N90. No other phone has recorded and played movies at a resolution as high as Nokia N90, which makes it the ideal champion for travels, while searching for a new apartment or family gatherings. The 0.1 Megapixel video-camera (352 x 288 pixels) means four times more than the other cell phones with video recording capabilities.

It comes equipped with a 2.1 inch TFT display (with a native resolution of 352 x 416 pixels), an external 65K colors display (with a native resolution of 128 x 128), a 2 Megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens and 64 MB of internal memory (which can be extended up to 8 GB with a RS-DV-MMC card).

The Nokia N95, another Nokia N Series mobile phone, is technically, one of the most advanced smart phones ever created, providing satellite navigation GPS, a 5 Megapixel camera and autofocus, 3G video calling and any other features that you can think of. If you've used another Nokia N Series phone or a Symbian handset, then it will surely impress you. It comes with a 5 Megapixel camera (being the first phone with such a powerful camera), a 2.6 inch TFT display, integrated GPS navigator, Wi-Fi and 160 MB of free space (which can be extended up to 8 GB with a microSD card).

But this mobile phone has its positive and its negative aspects as well. Powered by an Dual ARM 11 332 MHz processor; 3D Graphics HW Accelerator, 64 MB of RAM memory and having a Symbian OS 9.2, S60 rel. 3.1 interface, it runs very slow for a modern smart phone.

The battery life is also a bit too short. It is capable of keeping this phone up for only 6 hours of conversations and up to 200 hours in standby mode. But with such a lot of power and high-end technologies, these negative aspects will not be a problem. Anyway, the Nokia N Series mobile phones, even if they have the most powerful components and a lot of top-features, the price for a unit is not that low because technology is not so cheap.

Top 10 Smart Phones

Even if in the last year we haven’t seen a revolution in the smart phone segment, the well known brands have been capable of launching new models of smart phones, equipped with more powerful features and having a better design. For our top 10 smart phones we have chosen only 10 models which we think are the best handsets in the world.

The 10th place is occupied by the Samsung i7500 Galaxy. This smart phone is equipped with a 3.2 inch AMOLED touch screen (with a maximum resolution of 480 x 320 pixels), 8 GB of free space (which can be extended up to 16 GB with a microSD card), a Qualcomm MSM7200A 528 MHz processor and an Android 1.5 interface. For taking photos, this smart phone has a 5 Megapixel camera with a lot of high-end features. Being a top smart phone, the Samsung i7500 Galaxy has many connectivity features like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB and GPS, features which are common on all new smart phone models.

The 9th place is occupied by the Apple iPhone 3GS. Even if the release of the first model was eagerly awaited by everyone, the release of the third iPhone model did not draw so much attention.  The iPhone 3GS comes with the same design like the first model, but it is faster and more powerful. We choose the iPhone 3GS as part of our top 10 smart phones because it is equipped with the best capacitive touch screen, 16 or 32 GB of free memory, a 3.15 Megapixel camera, an ARM Cortex A8 600 MHz, PowerVR SGX graphics processor and 256 MB of RAM memory.

On the 8th place you can find the Toshiba TG01. Toshiba TG01 impresses with its 4.1 inch screen and the processing power which is matched by only few smart phones at the moment. It comes with a 3.15 Megapixel camera, a Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8250 1 GHz processor, 256 MB of RAM memory and 512 MB of free space (which can be extended up to 16 GB with a microSD card). Like all the handsets which are part of our top 10 smart phones, it has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB, 3G and GPS.

For the 7th place we have chosen the Sony Ericsson Satio. It is the first smart phone in the world which comes equipped with a 12 Megapixel camera. It has a 3.5 inch TFT touch screen, 128 MB of free space (which can be extended up to 32 GB with a microSD card), 256 MB of RAM memory and an ARM Cortex A8 600 MHz, PowerVR SGX graphics processor. Why isn’t this smart phone our number one choice? Well, even if it has been combined with high-end technologies and it is the first smart phone with a 12 Megapixel camera, Sony Ericsson has launched this model with a lot of software malfunctions.

The Samsung i8910 Omnia HD takes the 6th place. Like the Galaxy or Satio, Samsung Omnia HD is oriented on the multimedia side, although in terms of operating platform we are dealing with a smart phone. The ability to shoot and play HD movies is the strongest point of this smart phone. Equipped with a 3.7 inch TFT touch screen capable of supporting 16 million colors, an 8 Megapixel HD camera and 16 GB of free space (which can be extended up to 32 GB with a microSD card), this smart phone has many fans.

The 5th place is occupied by HTC Hero. This phone may look like it has everything, but in fact it is missing on one of the most important features. It lacks a QWERTY keyboard.  If it were equipped with a QWERTY keyboard, it could not have only 112 x 56.2 x 14.4 mm in dimensions and 135 grams in weight, extraordinary values for a smart phone. It also comes with a 3.2 inch touch screen, a 5 Megapixel camera, 512 MB of free space (which can be extended up to 32 GB with a microSD card) and a lot of connectivity features.

On the 4th place, the Nokia N97 is desirable even if it has minor shortcomings. Even if comes with a lot of technology like 5 Megapixel camera, a 3.5 inch touch screen, a full-QWERTY keyboard and a very optimized Symbian interface, it has many bugs and an immature interface. Another negative aspect which places this handset on the 4th spot of our top 10 smart phones is that it has a huge price.

The 3rd place is occupied by Motorola MILESTONE. The Motorola MILESTONE has a huge potential and the only reason why it is not on the first place is that it is not marketed in many countries yet. It is a complete device which reminds us that Motorola has invented the mobile phone.

Our second place goes to the HTC HD2.  We choose this smart phone for second place because it has the biggest touch screen used on a mobile phone ever (4.3 inch and 800 x 480 pixels resolution), the most powerful processor and not less than 448 MB of RAM memory. It is not a handset without flaws, but the photos or recorded clips’ quality does not matter that much when you can browse the internet almost as well as on a laptop.

Finally, we have reached the first place. The best smart phone of 2009, by our classification, is the Nokia N900. Even if it has many similar features with other models in our top, the most impressive aspect is that the Nokia N900 has an OS Linux Maemo operating system. Powered by an ARM Cortex A8 600 MHz, PowerVR SGX graphics processor, 256 MB of RAM memory and this new kind of operating system, this smart phone promises to be a revolution in smart phone terms.

Nokia Secret Codes

If you are a tech passionate and would like to know some secret details or change some inaccessible settings of your phone, you can try the following Nokia secret codes which will give you a full control of your cell phone. You only need to type these secret codes on the main screen type and press the # key before them. In our list, Nokia secret codes have included the # symbol, so when you type these you don’t need to put another # symbol before these codes.

If you want to know the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) of your phone, a value which is unique for every phone in particular, you need to type *#06# on the main screen and you will get it. This IMEI value is necessary if your phone has been stolen or it simply broke.

Many Nokia customers are disturbed by the operator logo which appears on the main screen, which can’t be removed from the phone’s settings. If you want to remove it on a Nokia cell phone, you will need to type *#67705646# on the main screen.  This secret code is very useful for those Nokia models which have a small display. Most Nokia cell phones have in their main menu an option for resetting the phone to the factory settings.

This option will reset your phone to the factory settings but if you want a more accurate reset you should use *#7780# on the main screen. With this secret code, the phone’s settings will be reset more efficiently.  But pay attention because if you use this code on your phone, you will lose all files which you have stored in its internal memory.

For people who want to increase the signal strength for a better reception, typing *#3370# on the main screen will solve this problem. This code is very useful even if you want to use GPRS but the service is responding too slowly. But even if you will get a better signal strength, the phone’s battery will drain faster so you will need to charge it more often.Another cool Nokia secret code is *#92702689#.

If you type this code on the main screen, a secret menu will appear and you will be able to see much information about your Nokia cell phone. For example you can see the Serial Number, the month and year of manufacture, the date when the phone has been purchased, the life timer of your phone and the date when you have done the last repair. These details are not available in the cell phone’s menu so there is no other way for you to see them.

On a Nokia cell phone, some settings will ask you for a security code if you want to activate them. The standard security code is 12345 but you can change it in the main menu – settings – security. If you have changed this code and forgot it, the only way to reset it is that you type the *#7328748263373738# secret code on the main screen. After you type this, the security code will be changed to 12345 and you will be able to change it again. These secret codes are the most useful but the list may continue. There are a lot of other Nokia secret codes, so if you need other secret codes with a simple search on the internet you certainly will find what you need.
