Motorola Rokr

Even if it reduced its staff to the lowest numbers in the history of the company, the mobile division from Motorola is still alive and so, a new terminal sees the light of the day. Motorola ROKR U9 is a clamshell with an average cost, which has as a target the people who remained faithful to this brand. Small, sleek, and above all, incredibly aerodynamic, Motorola ROKR U9 has been launched in an effort to limit the disastrous financial results registered last year.

Announced in October 2007, Motorola ROKR U9 was released in February 2008. The phone is available in several colors such as gray, red, pink and gold.

Motorola ROKR U9 shines in many chapters, when it comes to design. Even from the first sight, the aerodynamic shape of the device will draw attention in a particular way. The second asset of the phone is the glossy plastic used in its manufacture. While the front side of the clamshell, which includes a secondary display, is fully covered by the glossy plastic, the back of the phone is covered by a plastic housing shaft, which feels great when held in hand. On the right side of the phone, we found a key, which opens a voice recorder that allows the user to call a contact simply by saying its name. On the left side of the clamshell, there is a dedicated photo / video camera button and a volume key.

The proprietary microUSB port was placed at the bottom of the device. The 2-megapixel camera can be found in front of the phone, and is covered by a thin colorless plastic that protects it against possible scratches. You will also be able to use the touch music keys located just below the external display, but only if the music player is on. The phone keyboard layout is standard, and the keys are quite large. They have an average response time, which means that it must be pressed a little harder. Otherwise, they provide a better experience when using the SMS.

The menu can be controlled easy with the D-pad button and the two contextual keys. Besides the usual keys back (Delete), Motorola has also included a multimedia key, which opens the music player when pressed. Immediately above the keyboard, in the upper left corner, there is a small ambient light sensor. The phone’s backlighting is exceptional, so there will be no problems if you will decide to use the phone in dark areas. The 2-inches main screen s does not touch the keyboard due to a thin rubber band placed on the bottom of the keys. Motorola ROKR U9 measures 90x48.6x16.4mm and weighs just 87.5g (including the battery). The clamshell mechanism is quite robust, which makes the phone stronger. Even if it is a little more difficult, users will be able to open the clamshell with one hand. Overall, the Motorola U9 is pleasant with its shape and its design lines, but let us see what is under these beautiful clothes.

Motorola ROKR U9 includes a TFT (240 x 320 pixels) supporting 262,000 colors. The picture quality is above average, the colors are very well defined and the contrast is extremely vivid. The screen is visible even when exposed under sunlight. The OLED secondary screen supports 65,000 colors and a resolution of 128x160 pixels and it is visible in the sunlight.

The 2-megapixel camera placed on the front side of the clamshell has no special features except the 8x digital zoom. The photo / video camera can be initiated by pressing the dedicated button found on the left side of the phone. You can also set the D-pad button to initiate the camera. The preview image cannot be seen in full screen. There are no additional settings for the camera, so once you open the module, you will be able to take pictures. Saving photos is easy, but requires extra handling of the menu.

The games category contains only Java compatible software, such as Sudoku, Motorola text, Motorola Setup and Backup. The WebAccess category, as suggested by its name, provides users with access to Internet through different access points, which can be set in advance or installed by the network operator. You will be able to choose which access point is used by default if you want to connect to the Internet.

The integrated browser (Symphony 1.1) is mediocre and can be replaced with Opera Mini if you want a better experience. The multimedia category will give you access to the Media Finder, Camera, Camcorder, Voice Recorder and Google. The phone gives users four connectivity options: Bluetooth, USB, voice networks and data Connections. The last of the nine main categories, settings, is the largest and from here, you can do the most important things. There are seven Subcategories: Profiles, Themes, Home Screen, Call Settings, Phone settings, and Network Security.

Motorola ROKR U9 includes Java MIDP 2.0 CLDC 1.1, with 900 KB of free memory. This will allow users to install other Java applications within the low memory.

Because it is an average budget phone, Motorola ROKR U9 includes only technologies like EDGE and GPRS Class 10, which is more than enough for its price. The tests showed us that the phone has an average speed for data transfers: 120 kb / s download and 70 kb / s for upload EDGE. The integrated browser, Symphony, can format any web page on the entire width of the screen, but can also display the image in full screen. Users will be able to save any favorite site directly on the phone’s memory. The user can stop the displaying of images or Java scripts. The clamshell also includes Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP support.

In terms of messaging, the phone accepts standard text messages, MMS, Flash and audio messaging, and Email. The e-mail client usually accepts mail POP3, SMTP and IMAP4 protocols. The quad-band phone (GSM 850 / GSM 900 / GSM 1800 / GSM 1900) has a good reception of the GSM signal. The sound, during conversations, has a quite low clarity.

Motorola ROKR U9 is most likely powered by a Freescale i.MX31 processor, which runs at speeds up to 532 MHz. Even if it is a powerful processor, I noticed that the phone is a bit slow, especially when running more than one application. Motorola U9 includes 34.5 MB of internal memory, but only 25 MB are available to users. The storage space can be expanded up to 4GB thanks to the microSD slot. The slot was placed near the SIM card slot, under the battery.

The integrated music player supports a wide range of formats such as MP3, AAC, AAC +, WMA, OGG and AMR. It can be minimized and can run in the background while other applications and phone functions can be accessed. Several settings can improve the sound quality: Equalizer, Audio Space, Shuffle, Auto-Repeat and bass boost. The music player can also be controlled with the touch keys below the external display. The sound quality is average, like the music player interface. Moreover, the phone comes with headphones in the sales package and it does not contain a 2.5mm jack or 3.5 mm jack port. I noticed that the phone also has a lag when the music player is running in the background and you try to navigate through the menu or open another application.

I was pleasantly surprised by the design of the phone, but I was also impressed by what it has to offer in terms of features. Even if it is only a medium budget phone, I expected more than it actually has. I hope that the design will be more important to the Motorola fans than the features, otherwise I do not think that the phone will have a great success.

Black Berry Storm

Announced in September 2008, Black Berry Storm 9500 has been made available on the market, barely two months later in November 2008.

Black Berry Storm 9500 is not just the first touchscreen Blackberry device, but it is RIM's first product that lacks a physical keyboard. For business people, who are the main target of the smartphones, this might sound weird. However, to replace this deficiency, RIM has introduced a new innovative technology called SurePress. Patented by RIM, the SurePress technology makes the physical screen to react like a button when pressed. The display also provides a haptic feedback, which means that you will not feel the difference between a physical and a virtual keyboard, on screen. However, we could not overlook the sense of insecurity that I had when I pressed the touch screen. It seems that it is well embedded in the body casing, and moving to each press. Moreover, the first time I held the phone in my hand, I thought that the device has a great defect, since the screen is 2mm shorter than its frame.

A thin foil protects the touch screen, so the number of fingerprints is limited.  The device appears to have been built very solid, can be held very well in hand, but is heavier than I have expected (155g including the battery). Entirely made from metal, its back case is the main reason that the phone is so heavy. However, Storm 9500 is not even a big phone compared with the HTC Touch HD, or even iPhone 3G, and measures 112.5 x 62.2 x 14mm.

Surprisingly for a business phone, Storm 9500 includes a 3.5mm jack port on the right. Below, near the port, there is a volume button and a dedicated camera button. On the left side of the phone, are a dedicated voice command button and a microUSB port. Under the 3.25-inches screen, there are 4-buttons: Accept and Reject call, Menu and Back. Above the touch screen, there is an LED, which is often used for alerts. The 3.2-megapixel camera, placed on the back of the smartphone, includes functions such as flash and autofocus. A thin plastic covers both the camera, as well as the flash. It has the role to protect the lens and the flash against scratches. Another innovative feature that we find in this smartphone is the two buttons on the top side of the device. Even if they are defined as buttons, you can still press their icons to use them. The left one blocks the touch screen so it cannot be pressed accidentally, while the right one interrupts the sound during a conversation in progress. The MicroSD slot has been placed under the back cover, so you will need to remove it before you put in a new memory card. On the backside, at the bottom of the metal case, you can see a small speaker. Overall, I was pleased with how the Black Berry Storm 9500 looks and quite happy with the way RIM has solved the problem of the external control layout.

As I mentioned above, Black Berry Storm 9500 is the first device that has a capacitive touch screen. It measures 3.25 inches and displays 65 000 colors and a resolution of 360x480 pixels. The capacitive touch screen eliminates the need to use a stylus, and is resistant to scratches. It includes the SurePress innovative technology, a technology patented by RIM (Research in Motion), which offers a haptic feedback. This screen allows the user to navigate through the phone menus, using the fingers, similar to a computer’s mouse. To select an option simply click on the screen surface. If you wish to start the selected application, you only have to click it again. These displays have the ability to adjust the screen settings, so double click can be used as a method of selection and navigation through the phone menu.

The legibility under bright light is good, but you will have to set your screen brightness to its maximum level. As the main tool for text input, the TFT LCD touch screen includes an accelerometer function, which enables users to use the QWERTY keyboard by simply turning the phone in landscape mode. Unfortunately, while the responsiveness of the touch screen is very good, the need to press virtually every letter practically leads to decreasing the speed of writing.

The 3.2-megapixel photo / video camera presents characteristics like autofocus and flash LED. Unfortunately, the camera interface is missing almost completely. The only way to adjust some settings is to click the Menu button after you open the camera function. However, the camera includes some interesting features for photo fans: geo-tagging and image stabilizer. The maximum image resolution is 2048x1536 pixels, but it can be reduced to save storage space. The only other camera settings are colors, and picture quality. Shooting photos with the Black Berry Storm 9500’s 3.2 megapixel camera is quite difficult, as the preview image on the screen is covered at the bottom with a band, which has some settings. This makes the framing of the picture to be quite difficult. Otherwise, I found the quality of the pictures to be quite good. Even if this camera is not one of the best, the quality of the pictures is certainly above average. The color and the contrast look good, while the noise is kept to a decent level. Videos can also be recorded in QVGA resolution at 30fps, but the quality is lower than I expected, so it is not recommended to use the smartphone for recording clips. Overall, I think Black Berry Storm 9500 includes a camera, which is good enough for a smartphone that has as a target the business segment, a camera, which I am sure that it will meet the needs of this phone’s users.

Black Berry Storm 9500 runs the Blackberry 4.7.0 operating system on a platform version 4.0.0.98. This seems to be the old OS 4.6.0, converted to the touch screen. Starting with the Black Berry Storm 9500, it is the latest operating system available on BlackBerry devices with touch screen.

However, if you already have or have had a BlackBerry, 9500’s interface will not surprise you at all, because RIM did not come with anything new in terms of productivity tools. Instead, the new BlackBerry interface now looks much better than the old one. The colors of the icons you will find in the main menu are illuminated slightly in contrast with a dark background, and make a very good impression, even to an old BlackBerry fan. As usual, the Office suite, called Documents To Go, developed by DataViz, is included in the operating system. Unfortunately, you can only read and edit Word documents, Excel Docs, and PowerPoint presentations, but you will have to pay if you want to create new documents. Instead of risking bringing new functions that might not serve too much to the user, RIM chose to maintain all the old functions and applications, to which they gave a graphic gloss. It is not a bad idea, since most of the Blackberry productivity tools are solid. Problems arise when you dig deeper and see that the menus are boring.

Blackberry Strom

After it gave us the opportunity to review the first clamshell smartphone produced by RIM (Research in Motion) - BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220, Pure Mobile has given us the opportunity to test the first BlackBerry touchscreen smartphone, the Blackberry Storm 9500. From the terminal building, but from the list of specifications too, we realized that the Blackberry Storm 9500 has been designed to compete directly with phones like iPhone 3G and HTC G1. Whether it succeeds or not to raise itself to the value of its competitors, we will find from the following material. Even if the Storm 9500 is sold under the Vodafone brand, it can be found in a decoded version too, so that it can be used with other mobile operators.

The address book can store an unlimited number of contacts, as long as your available memory allows it. Each contact can be supplemented with more numbers, as well as with email addresses, birthdays, anniversaries, and addresses both office and home.

You can play two games when you get bored. Those games are BrickBreaker Word and Mole. Of course, there is the possibility to add more programs Blackberry or Java compatible.

One of this smartphone’s main disadvantages is the fact that it does not have a Wi-Fi connection. However, this is compensated by the fact that it includes the latest HSDPA technology.

blackberry-storm_msp1

The Blackberry Storm 9500 that we received has engraved on it the Vodafone brand and includes Opera Mini browser that works great. Web browsing is excellent, and pages load fast enough, especially when using HSDPA connection.

The browser has several settings that allow you to choose to see the page in mobile mode, or simply as a computer screen. However, the main reason people are determined to buy RIM phones is the advanced messaging services. Blackberry Storm 9500 is no stranger to this, and it includes all the Blackberry specific features. The phone even includes the possibility to have multiple email accounts. You can use any of the following instant messenger applications: Yahoo! Messenger, Windows Live, AIM, ICQ or Google Talk. All are easy to access and operate in standard parameters. Unfortunately, even if the number of accounts is not limited, these are available only through the BlackBerry Internet Service. Therefore, in order to integrate the BlackBerry system within a company, it is necessary to install the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES).

The Smartphone Synchronization with the PC can be done easily using the BlackBerry Desktop Manager. The transfer is very fast, whether you synchronize your messages and e-mails or simply want to fill your phone with music.

blackberry-strom-2

Blackberry Storm 9500 smartphone is compatible with quad band GSM (850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900), which provides GPRS, EDGE and HSDPA connections. Other tools include Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity with A2DP and microUSB support (including charging). The sound during calls is excellent, almost impressive. You will be able to talk on the phone, even in noisy environments. The GSM received signal is also very good in both cases: EDGE or WCDMA.

Blackberry Storm 9500 includes a Qualcomm processor, which works with speeds up to 624MHz. This seems to be a powerful processor, unfortunately I experienced lags even blockings of the operating system, but occasionally and only occasionally. I am not very sure why this is happening, but I am sure that such problems are from the software and not from the hardware.

The Smartphone includes 1GB of internal memory and 128 MB of flash memory storage. The storage space can be expanded up to 16GB via the microSD slot. The sales package contains an 8GB microSD card.

Because it is a phone dedicated to the business area, I did not have too high expectations from the Storm 9500. However, I was surprised by the quality of the multimedia features, even if present in limited numbers. The music player interface is very appealing, and the options and features you can use are the following: Shuffle, Repeat, Playlists and Equalizer. You can listen to songs stored in MP3, AAC and WMA formats. The music player is compatible with the function, which displays the album cover of the song you are listening.

blackberry-strom-3

The phone offers a pair of headphones compatible with the 3.5 mm audio jack, but I recommend changing them with a better pair. You also have the choice to listen to music via Bluetooth. The music player can run in the background, however, be careful how many applications you use at the same time. The external speaker is very strong and clear enough.

Overall, the characteristics of the multimedia are surprisingly good for a business phone, and especially for a Blackberry device.

The 1400 mAh Li-Ion battery has autonomy of 360 hours in standby mode, and about 5 hours and 30 minutes of talk time. From the tests we made the average time of use is for about 4 days. The users, which use the calling function very often, will need to charge the phone for about two to three times a week. However, the autonomy of the smartphone is acceptable for a person that mostly uses the Blackberry messaging services.

blackberry-storm

At first sight, Blackberry Storm 9500 is very attractive. Moreover, it will become even more attractive as you start to use it. However, there are some imperfections of the operating system. Some bugs make the device not to raise itself to the quality level expected. Being the first of a series of other touch-screen smartphones from BlackBerry, it might prove itself as fatal for many devices made by other brands, but Storm 9500 makes a good overall impression, even if it has some drawbacks.

HTC Touchflo

One of the first smartphones including the latest Microsoft operating system for mobile devices, Windows Mobile 6.5 - HTC Touch2 is a Pocket PC for average budgets. The phone’s appearance was preceded by numerous rumors since the beginning, when information about the entire line of HTC for 2009 were disclosed on the Internet.

With the code name HTC Mega, the smartphone was officially launched this autumn, under the official name of HTC Touch2. Touch2 has a beautiful design, having the same lines as his older predecessor, HTC Touch. The test equipment that we received included an earlier version of the new Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system, so I will try to focus more on its new features, and less on their functionality.

Announced in September 2009, HTC Touch2 is available on the market from October 2009. HTC Touch2 is available in three colors: black, brown and silver.

htc-touchflo

At a first look, HTC Touch2 is small and quite thin, just the kind of phone that fits in any pocket. The compact form also makes it resistant to easy falls, but I do not think it is an extremely durable device, because it is a phone for average budgets. The front of the whole phone is covered by a 2.8-inch touch screen, while the back of the phone includes only a 3 megapixel camera. Below the screen, there is a set of keys to improve the user interaction with the interface of the phone. Starting from left to right those are Accept calls, Home, Menu and Back, Reject calls. On the bottom of the screen, between the screen and the keys mentioned above, there is a graduated scale, which is used to make the zoom in / out when you open the interface of the camera.

htc-touchflo-2

HTC Touch2 has a resistive touch screen, so you will need a stylus, which was placed in the right corner, on the bottom of the smartphone's. There is also a miniUSB port near the stylus slot and a 3.5 mm audio jack port on the top of the phone. The left side of the device includes a microSD slot and a long volume key. The camera on the back of the phone does not include other options like flash, but it appears to be well protected with a metal plate surrounding the module. There is also a small speaker near the metal plate that protects the camera module of the smartphone. The dimensions are 104 x 55 x 12.9 mm, while the phone's weight including the battery is 110g. The plastic used in its manufacture does not seem cheap at all. However, the smartphone is surrounded by a strip of silver plastic, which will certainly peel after an intensive use. Certainly, this will make the phone look pretty ugly. However, HTC Touch2 benefits from a simple, yet elegant design, which will almost certainly attract most customers.

htc-touchflo-3

HTC Touch2 benefits from a TFT resistive touch screen of 2.8-inch that supports 65,000 colors and a resolution of 240x320 pixels. Being a resistive screen has some disadvantages such as low sensitivity to touch, lower functionality of finger control, low visibility under strong sunlight, and lack of the multi-touch function. However, this type of screen lowers the price of the phone, making it cheaper. Yet that deprives him of several more functions. HTC Touch2 does not have the accelerometer function, so users will not be able to rotate the image of the phone in landscape or portrait modes. In addition, the quality of the displayed image is a bit mediocre, since the contrast is not so good and the colors are a bit dull.

The 3 megapixel camera is easy to use, because it does not benefit from advanced features. Basically, you will need to direct the module towards the subject and just press on the button. Even if there is not a dedicated button for the camera, you can use the touch button that appears on the screen. You can zoom in / out passing your fingers on the graduated scale from the bottom of the screen.

The interface of the camera is simple and easy to use. The maximum resolution that you can use for images is 2048x1536 pixels. Video clips can be recorded in CIF mode at a maximum resolution of 352x288 pixels. Unfortunately, there are no features like autofocus, flash or others, even standard, but only the basic settings, such as White Balance, ISO, Brightness and Effects. The obtained images are decent, but do not expect more than average quality.

htc-touchflo-4

HTC Touch2 is running the new Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional operating system, and the second version of the HTC TouchFLO interface. The HTC TouchFLO interface was stripped of any transition animation effects for the messages menu, email, gallery, music, weather, and more. The test terminal that we received has an older version of the operating system - build 21839, version that has been improved.

Even if the HTC TouchFLO 2.0 interface allows navigation through the menus by the "swipe" method, the lack of the accelerometer function limits its functionality. Thus, you will be able to navigate using "swipe" more as you scroll, and less when you move from one menu to another. However, this model introduces a new way to navigate through menus. The small icons from the bottom of the Homescreen will help you reach your desired application or function very quickly. Hold your finger down on any of these icons and then move your finger left or right until you reach the window you are looking for.

The main menu of Windows Mobile 6.5 does not impress me much, but at least the boring white background from the earlier version of the operating system was removed. Instead, the icons of the settings, functions and applications contained in the operating system are now presented in three columns, spaced winding. Strange at first, but I found no real advantage or disadvantage. Of course, there is an aesthetic side, but as tastes differ, you may enjoy this new settlement of the icons in the main menu or you may not.

htc-touchflo-5

The navigation is easy with no need for a stylus, using only finger swiping to the right or to the left of the screen, just as I described above. The Start menu no longer contains the frequently used programs list, but it will send you to the main menu of the smartphone. To facilitate the method of writing and to help those who use different methods for entering data, HTC has introduced three types of keyboards: telephone type keyboard, compact QWERTY keyboard and full QWERTY keyboard. For the business people, HTC has included Office Mobile package, which now includes also the OneNote Mobile application, in addition to the usual Excel, PowerPoint and Word.

The Notes application can not be accessed when talking on the phone, unless you click on the Menu button on the screen and you choose Create new note. The touch screen offers a number of interesting features like zoom (zoom in / out) when browsing the Internet or when viewing pictures. This is done by double-clicking on the screen. The Internet Explorer browser was equipped with Adobe Flash Lite 9.0, but we had some problems with some websites. I think the new version of firmware corrects the errors that I experienced while browsing.

The remaining included applications are standard for a Windows Mobile device, with a few exceptions. Touch2 includes standard productivity tools: Notes, Tasks and Calendar, Mobile Office suite with Word, Excel and PowerPoint, Adobe Reader (version 2.5) to view PDF documents, Voice Recorder, and the same boring games, Bubble Breaker and Solitaire.

Nokia N97 32GB

Nokia N97 32GB is neither thin nor easy, primarily because of the QWERTY slide keyboard, being a phone that sits better in a hand of a man. The slide is firm, its opening being a bit tricky at first. At least it got me a little, until I figured out how and where to click to open it. When the keyboard is opened, the phone looks like a laptop, a micro one of course.

The front is dominated by the touch screen, which, to be honest, could have been even bigger. At the top end of the phone, we find the speaker, the camera and the photo sensor, and on the bottom end, we have three buttons, one for accessing the menu, placed obliquely, and the touch sensitive buttons, which accept or reject calls.

The 3.5 inch screen is big enough for almost an optimal viewing, in mobile conditions, of websites and various office-type documents. It is quite bright even in daylight and has an excellent viewing angle. It responds very well to tapping, even at the multi-touch tapping, so I cannot say that I encountered problems while using it. I like a lot the fact that it has an accelerometer, which repositions the image depending on the phone’s position. it is realized quickly and without errors.

nokia-n97-32gb

Should I say something about the pure telephony? It became kind of a secondary application for the smartphone of today. It remains the most effective way of communication. It worked perfectly, without losing the signal and the conversations I have had were decent. When writing telephone numbers, the virtual numeric keypad worked great. It has large enough buttons, so you cannot accidentally click on another number then the one desired. A little harder, I adapted to the address book search. It is quite hard, and is one of those minor drawbacks.

Another element, which has not left me careless, is the battery autonomy. The Li-Ion BP-4L battery provided us about 3 days of use. I want to say that after using it, every time I blocked the screen to save energy.

The phone has available the GPS and the A-GPS functions, the last one being of great help in a faster positioning. On this big screen, the maps can be viewed in quite visible conditions for our eyes.

nokia-n97-32gb-2

The Navteq map is more complete, more detailed, even with different POI (points of interest) and, with the possibility of navigation. The phone has 4-ways to view them, 2D, 3D, Satellite and Hybrid, I choose the last one for its combination of Photo / Map that it provides, with which we can focus more easily. Thanks to the 3G, the map is loading very fast when walking. The A-GPS positioned me accurately, and as long as I used it, I encountered no errors.

Nokia N97 32GB is a business phone. Or, at least through the aspect, this is the first impression that it leaves us. Now, those from Nokia, after bringing together a touchscreen with a QWERTY keyboard, they have included multimedia top features. They have expanded its area of use in this segment so loved and used by us.

First, the phone has an internal memory of 32 GB. Huge! How many documents or emails you need to take with you? Honestly, I do not have so many tons of documents or emails not even on the computer. The huge internal memory is not for documents but for collections, many music, photos or videos collections.

The first multimedia applications, which we all think of, are the ones used for listening to music or viewing some small videos. The phone is compatible with MP3, AAC, eAAC, eAAC +, WMA audio files. Unfortunately, it does not have support for HD files. Maybe the next generation will have. So far, we are limited to MP4 and 3GP video files. It can be considered another small inconvenient. They did not go all the way with the multimedia facilities.

nokia-n97-32gb-3

I liked how the music sounds both through the built-in loudspeaker and through the headphones from the package. We can even use other headphones, because the phone has a 3.5 mm jack. The phone has the same player that we are used to from the Symbian OS, which also has predefined equalizer settings. The sound has a decent quality, at least for me.

The following is a 5 megapixel camera that gives good results for a cell phone, both on the photo and especially on the video part. Nokia N97 32GB’s camera has Carl Zeiss Tessar 2.8/5.4 AF lens and 5-Megapixels. The Auto Focus works precisely, without errors, even from very close range in Macro mode. The flash is powerful enough even for the largest outdoor shooting in these conditions causing noise, but the best is to photograph from a close range, max 1.2 meters.

The phone has available some settings such as scenes (Automatic, M - user defined, Macro, Portrait, Landscape, Sport, Night, Night Portrait), color tones (Normal, Sepia, Black & White, Vivid, Negative), White Balance, Exposure, ISO (automatic, low, medium, high), contrast, type of shooting (single shot or multishot).

nokia-n97-32gb-4

The images made have geo-coding possibility or can be shared directly through the Internet through OVI. They can be edited too. At Micro Edit, we can make minimum changes and add text or different effects. The photos have a maximum resolution of 2584 x 1938 pixels. They are clear in natural light. The colors are natural, and the environmental noise is a medium one.

As a mobile operating system, the phone has the Symbian S60 5th Edition. I do not have news about it. I will try only to show some applications that have left me a good impression.

As business applications, the phone has available the Office and PDF reader, a small notes editor, an archiver, a converter for various units of measure and a useful English Dictionary. We must not forget the calendar for meetings or the possibility to receive mail even in sync with an Exchange server.

Next, I like the default Symbian browser with Adobe Flash Lite support, one of the most complete, where we can watch without problems even the videos on Youtube. The resolution of 640 x 360 pixels is also quite ok for viewing in good conditions web pages. Along with the 3G modem, most of the web pages I have visited were loaded quickly and without errors.

nokia-n97-32gb-5

As a proof of Nokia’s orientation to the consumer market, and by that I mean to our needs for fun and entertainment, the phone included some dedicated applications, especially social networks such as Hi5, Facebook or YouTube.

Nokia Ovi is actually a suite of applications, in which the manufacturers have merged about everything you need to do with a phone. You can access it, you can make a backup and synchronize it with your PC, you can manage contacts, you can browse the photo galleries and you can show them to your friends via the internet and even download Ovi maps when you need them.

In the end, I can conclude that the model N97 is the most "powerful", the smartest and most "full" of multimedia “goodies” smartphone currently available from the Finnish company. It is a functional device that can replace a laptop when you need one. You can access the Internet, read e-mails and documents but also listen to music or attend your favorite sites for social networking. Nokia N97 32GB is a device that can achieve the necessary balance between work and fun, occupation and hobbies.
