Nokia N73

Nokia N73 was a revolutionary device when it first appeared on the market and even after a few years, it remains one of the most wanted phones. It is powerful and very rich in functions. It looks good and has an excellent camera with Carl Zeiss Lens.

It was a very successful phone. Nokia has continued on the same idea with Nokia N95, which was also a success. Moreover, Nokia N73 has shown how powerful the Symbian is, and has shown that people want smartphones, so now their list has many Symbian S60 phones. As a smartphone, Nokia N73 has many accessories in its box. Besides the charger, the manual and the software CD, we find a USB cable, the headphones, a branded cloth for cleaning and a cord which can hold the phone. With its 116 grams, Nokia N73 is somewhere in the middle of the weight top. At how many functions it has, the 116 grams does not seem too much. It fits in the jeans pocket too, even if it will not go unnoticed. However, there are no smartphones under 100 grams.

Nokia N73 is made out of high quality materials. The plastic looks good and it is solid. The front is occupied mostly by the 2.4 inch screen. The keypad occupies less than half. Above the display we have the camera used in video calls, the light sensor and the loudspeaker.

nokia-n73

On the left side, the phone has only the infrared port. We must appreciate the fact that Nokia has an infrared port; many other phones have only Bluetooth. On the right side, we have the volume control keys, the camera button and a key for direct access to photo and video gallery. At the top side, we find the on/off button, which starts or stops the device, and the speakers. At the bottom, we find the microphone, the charger plug, the Pop-Port for the PC connections and a slot for the memory card.

Nokia always installs Symbian OS on its smartphones. Nokia N73 has Symbian version 9.1 operating system, and a 3rd edition graphical interface. The phone is acting very well, and there are no blocking problems. It is true that in some menus there is a little delay, but nothing annoying. The 42 MB of internal memory fully contributes to the phone's performance. The menu is intuitive, although it is complex and offers many features and applications. It is a well organized menu.

nokia-n732

The screen is one of the best screens I have ever seen on a phone. It has 2.4 inch and a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. The colors are vivid, the contrast is very good, the text and the images are very clear.

The address book is pretty sophisticated and you can add as many contacts as you want. For each one you can add details, phone numbers, email address, the company name, the job, etc. The calendar can be synchronized with the Outlook using the Nokia PC Suite software provided by Nokia. Synchronization can be done with a SyncML server. Searching the address book is very easy and it can be done by typing the first letters of a contact's name.

nokia-n733

Sending and receiving SMS and MMS messages is quick and intuitive. Although the messaging application has not improved in any way since Nokia N70, I do not see what you could add to it. Not much to say here, just that the keyboard is very good for writing messages. Keys are easily pressed and they provide a good answer, so SMS lovers will beat new records for number of characters per minute.

The images are very good and clear on the big screen. The image gallery is excellent; pictures load quickly, and switching from one picture to another can be done without any delay.

The audio player is good and offers the user enough settings. Songs can be grouped by artist, album and genre. The 5-band equalizer lets the user raise the bass volume a little. Unfortunately, the headphones that come in the package box are not too good, but it will not be too easy to change them. The phone does not have a 3.5 mm jack so you cannot put any headphones, so you should seek for an adapter from their Pop-port to a 3.5 mm jack. It is good though that the audio volume is high enough, my main problem with all the phones was the sound volume being too low. Nokia N73 does not have that problem, so you can listen to music in a noisy environment. Also on the music chapter, it is good to remember that Nokia N73 has an FM radio, but without RDS.

nokia-n734

The video player does its job well and it knows how to run 3GP or MP4 videos. Nokia N73 is not the phone on which you can watch a two hours movie, but the screen is big enough for that. The problem is that you cannot copy AVI movies from your PC directly to the phone. If you want your movies to work well, than you have to convert any movie to 3GP or MP4 and to decrease the resolution, so the movies will occupy less memory. There are lots of programs that can do this and some will even let you include subtitles. The easiest way, unless you want subtitles, is to use the Nokia Video Manager, which is part of the Nokia PC Suite.

The camera is 3.15 megapixels. You know already that megapixels are not everything, so I will mention the Carl Zeiss lens, the autofocus and the flash. It was one of the best mobile cameras that ever appeared. Meanwhile, a lot of competitors have emerged with 5 or 8 megapixels, but if you go back in time to the moment when Nokia N73 appeared, we can say without any mistakes that Nokia has done a great job.

When you will surf on the Internet you will use the 3G technology, or maybe the EDGE technology. It depends on what kind of technology your operator handles. HSDPA would have been great on a smartphone such as Nokia N73, but at the time, I do not think that many phones had HSDPA. Unfortunately, N73 does not have WiFi. Nokia N73 has a very good browser. It loads the internet pages very fast, especially if you have 3G. The arrow type cursor is also very useful because it helps you reach the link pages in which you are interested faster. You can install Opera Mobile, which is a good browser too.

h1062

In addition to USB, the data transfer can be done via Bluetooth or infrared. Infrared is a little old, so you got no use for it. You can use the infrared for transforming your phone into a remote control for home electronics. Some applications let you do that. The Bluetooth, instead, became about standard for all phones. And besides the handsfree used while driving, you can connect to your Nokia N73 a pair of stereo Bluetooth headphones so you can listen to music without the wires representing any inconvenience.

At the organizer chapter, Nokia N73 is one of the best. Both schedule and task lists are excellent. These lists can synchronize with your Outlook using Nokia PC Suite software.

For Mobile Office, there is a software package called QuickOffice, which lets you work with Word, Excel or PowerPoint. In addition, you can install and Adobe Reader LE, which reads PDF files. Besides the preinstalled applications and games, you can install a lot of new interesting things.

Nokia N73 is a good phone for anyone. Whether you are looking for a good business phone or you want to take pictures, listen to music and watch movies, Nokia N73 is the phone for you.

Nokia E75

Nokia E75 has been one of the most expected phones of 2009. Nokia E75 has a new design, focusing on the QWERTY slide keyboard. The screen is also large, so the phone can be used easier. Compared with E71 or E63, Nokia E75 is narrow, so it is a lot easier to hold it in your hand.

Nokia E75 comes in a medium size box. Inside it, we find the recharger, the microUSB cable, the handsfree headphones, a 4 GB microSD card, the software CD, and a lot of books and leaflets, and a Quick Start guide.

I expected Nokia E75 to be bigger than it actually is. At least, I did not expect it to be 14.4 mm thick, because it has a full QWERTY keyboard. The phone is 111.8 mm length and 50 mm width. It weights 139 grams, with 12 grams more than Nokia E71. What I mean is that phones with full QWERTY keyboards are not as large and heavy like in the old days.

Nokia E75 has a pleasant design. The phone is available in three colors: black, red and brown. The phone's front side is made from metal, which gives an elegant and stylish appearance. The keyboard gives the impression, when touching it, that it is a little sticky. In fact, they used a softer material for a better contact. Even with the QWERTY keyboard opened, the phone remains compact.

nokia-e752

In the front side, the phone has the ambient light sensor, the secondary camera for video calls and the speakerphone. Under these, we have a 2.4 inch TFT screen which occupies half of the phone's front side. The alphanumeric keypad is located under the screen. The eight buttons around the directional key are quite cramped, so it is not very convenient to use it. If you have large fingers, you will be able to click on them without any problems. The keys on the last row are placed too low, so it is difficult to keep the phone well in your hand and to push the buttons too. On the left side, the phone has a microUSB port and the microSD memory card slot. Both are protected against the ingress of dust particles with some rubber caps. On the right side, E75 has four buttons. Here we find the button which activates the camera, two keys for the volume control and a voice command key. Also on the right side, but a little lower we find the opening for the hand strap. On the left side at the bottom we find the charger slot. It was placed near the microphone.

nokia-e753

At the top side, the phone has a 3.5 mm jack for the handsfree headset. It does not have a protective cover, but it is well placed. It will be easy for you to listen to music using the headphones, without being disturbed by the phone in your pocket. The back side looks great. A stainless steel cap, surrounded by a matte black plastic, covers the battery. Besides the speaker, here we find the 3.2 megapixel camera, the LED flash and a mini mirror for self portrait. The Li-Ion BL-4U battery has 1000 mAh. Here I think that Nokia made a compromise to keep the phone at a reasonable weight. Unfortunately, the amount is quite small for a phone that will be used a lot. We must remember that Nokia E71 has been praised for its 1500 mAh  battery. Nokia E75 offers us a range of about 280 hours in stand-by in 2G network, 264 hours in 3G network , 5 hours and 20 minutes of talk time in 2G network and 4 hours and 12 minutes in 3G network . If you will listen to music, the battery will resist approximately 25 hours. I am sure that if you use it a lot, you will need to charge the battery every day.

Because of the QWERTY keyboard, you can type a message very fast. Whether you are a businessman who often sends e-mails or you use it to stay in touch with friends via SMS, you will see that writing them is a pleasure.

nokia-e754

Although Nokia E75 is a business phone, the multimedia functions are not bad. Let us start with the music player. This is the standard music player that we find on all Symbian S60 phones. It is enough to listen to music from time to time. It is good that the phone has a 3.5 mm audio jack, so you can connect any headphones you want. The player comes with five equalizer presets, but you can customize the presets if you want to. Nokia E75 has Bluetooth and A2DP support, which means that you can listen to stereo music using Bluetooth headphones. The sound quality is quite poor. There are small and cheap MP3 players that do a better job than this phone does.

The camera has 3.2 megapixels and flash LED. It is not the best phone camera you have ever seen. The video capture is done at a VGA resolution of 640 x 480 pixels with 30 fps. The video player is the well known Real Player. It can play 3GP and MP4 movie formats, in both portrait mode and landscape mode. Unfortunately, it does not support DivX or Xvid, but you can, at any time, install another video player to see movies in this format. If you want to listen to your favorite radio station, Nokia E75 gives you the opportunity to receive radio signal using the built-in FM radio with RDS. The radio is the same one that we find in Nokia E71. The interface is similar. The radio is able to automatically scan for radio stations in your area.

nokia-e755

Nokia E75 is rich in connectivity functions, showing us that it is a business phone. We will be able to use Bluetooth and the microUSB port for data transfer. Connecting to the internet is easy; you can choose between WiFi and HSDPA, which means that you will have a good speed for data transfer. Surfing the Internet with E75 is a pleasant experience. The browser succeeds in making the Web pages look good on a medium-sized screen.

The calendar looks good, and it gives you the opportunity to see events daily, weekly or monthly. You can add many types of events; and of course, you can add alarms to these events. The Office applications are not missing. All Nokia Symbian phones come with QuickOffice, which lets you view Word, Excel or Powerpoint files. Nokia E75 knows how to open this kind of files, and it gives you the possibility of modifying them.

nokia-e75

Nokia E75 has GPS too. The preinstalled navigation application is Nokia Maps 2.0. The maps are ok, but you will have to pay a license if you want to have voice navigation too. You can try Google Maps, which is free, but, as well as Nokia Maps, it does not have voice navigation.

Nokia E75 is a good phone for a business man, because of the good time management functions, as well as for the easy way to write emails. However, it is not for you if you want a phone with advanced multimedia features.

Nokia 5800

Many people have said that Nokia 5800 XpressMusic will be the iPhone killer. Frankly, I got tired of hearing that any full touchscreen phone will be the iPhone killer. Well, exactly how a Mac will always remain a Mac, an iPhone will always remain an iPhone, even though most touch screen phones are better than the iPhone. Overall, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic seems to be successful, but not too successful though. Maybe it is Nokia N97's fault, because many believe that they are saving money for it. It is equipped, it has a QWERTY keyboard, and it looks good, so if you do not have an urgent need for a phone than it is definitely worth waiting for. As for the competition, it is hard to say if Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is better than a Samsung Omnia or than a HTC Touch HD.

We got used to Nokia phones coming in a large box with a lot of accessories and Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is one of them. The box contains the charger, the microUSB cable for connecting the phone to a computer, a TV-Out, a microSD memory card with 8 GB internal memory and a headset. The office support is an enhancement that we have not seen in other phones, so it is welcome.

If we talk about the size of the phone, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is similar to iPhone 3G, HTC Touch Diamond and Samsung Omnia. It weights 109 grams, so it is perfect for its size and generally for a smartphone. The phone is 1.11 inches long, 5.17 inches wide and 1.55 inches thick. In terms of colors, this model will be produced in three colors: red, blue and black.

It has a good design. The touchscreen looks reasonably enough. The people from Nokia have chosen the black plastic. Perhaps some chrome metal would not have done any harm. I think that black plastic combined with chrome gives the impression of a quality phone. Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is the first touchscreen phone that has absolutely no metal in its case. It gave me the impression that this is a relatively cheap phone. Compared to other touchscreen phones, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is a little bit cheaper, but the difference is not very big. And one more thing that surprised me. The screen is as big as it seems. After seeing many pictures on the Internet and some videos, I would have expected it to be something more like Touch HD. Well, the screen is slightly smaller than an iPhone.

nokia-58002

The front is 80% occupied by the 3.2 inch screen. Under the screen we have the keys used for answering or for rejecting a call, and the menu key. In the top right we have a touch sensor that displays some of the main menus (Music, Images & Videos, Share Online, Video Center and Web) of this device. Exactly like the iPhone, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has a sensor that stops the screen during the talk-time. This function is really useful, otherwise you risk touching the virtual buttons while speaking.

nokia-58003

On the right side, the phone has the volume keys and the camera button used to take pictures or record videos. The camera button is placed at the edge and it is a little bit uncomfortable. If you are not careful, the phone may slip away from your hands while doing your pictures.  On the left side we have two slots, one for the MicroSD card, and the other for the SIM card. The idea of inserting the SIM card from outside into your phone is good; if you use several SIM cards than you can change them a lot easier. On the top side we have the 3.5 mm audio jack, along with the charger slot, the microUSB port and the on / off button. Both stereo speakers are mounted on the left side.

Nokia 5800 offers three interfaces for the main screen. One of these interfaces gives us 4 icons located at the top of the screen, each with a different function, such as the calendar, the audio player or the radio. Comparing to a Symbian S60 3rd Edition phone, the number of icons is a lot smaller, probably because it should be easier to press with your finger. The contacts, is another option, where we can place shortcuts to four people. This contacts option may show contacts and it can also show a list of recent calls.

nokia-58004

The menus are intuitive, although they are complex. If you had a Symbian phone before you will have no problem getting around. Even if you did not have a Symbian phone before, you can quickly find what you are looking for, because everything is so logical.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has a 3.2 inch screen with a diagonal of 360 x 640 pixel resolution, and has 16 million colors. The screen can be seen very well in bright light, something that becomes increasingly rare in touchscreen phones. Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has a perfect screen for viewing images, web pages, videos, and even for navigating long lists.

Like any other Nokia phones, the basic functions are implemented excellent. During calls, the loudspeaker produces a loud and clear sound, so we did not have any problems, not even when we were in noisy environments. In addition, the microphone is very good too.

nokia-58005

The message menu is not very different from the previous Symbian phones. I can say typing is very easy. We are able to handle it pretty well without using the stylus. It is not the same as the iPhone because the screen is a little small but it is good. If you have larger fingers or if you are clumsy, you have two styluses, one classical stylus and a special one.

When you say multimedia phone, everyone thinks of the iPhone. Well, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is not far away from that concept. Even from the name we realize that it has something to do with music. The audio player provides everything you could ever want from it. The music library is automatically sorted by artist, album, genre and composer. The music player recognizes many audio formats, and it is practically very difficult to find an audio file that is not supported by it. The video player is also pretty good. However, the support for DivX and XviD codecs is missing. Let us hope this inconvenience will be resolved in the future, but until then we can only watch 3GPP and MP4 videos. The FM radio looks very good; it has a simple interface but it is well cared at the same time. It automatically scans and saves radio stations in your area, and it has RDS.

The camera disappoints, with only 3.2 megapixels, providing images at a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels. The Carl Zeiss lens makes good pictures, but a phone that expensive should have at least a 5 megapixels camera. The camera has a Flash with two LEDs.

nokia-5800

Smartphones are usually better in the connectivity chapter and Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is no exception. The data transfer can be done via GPRS, EDGE, 3G and HSDPA. WiFi link is also present. The phone has a microUSB port, and A2DP Bluetooth, so you will be able to connect Bluetooth stereo headphones. The phone's Web browser is about the same as in Symbian S60 3rd Edition case. Surfing the internet is relatively easy. The zoom is made by simply pushing the screen. Pages can be displayed horizontally or vertically. The GPS is working very well. The phone comes with Nokia Maps 2.0 Touch preinstalled.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is a good phone for those who seek a full Nokia touchscreen phone.

Nokia 5530 Express Music

Nokia 5800 classic has been highly successful, so Nokia comes with something like that, but at a lower price. Nokia 5530 XpressMusic uses the Symbian S60 5th Edition platform and has touchscreen. The producer took out some equipment from the list of specifications, to be able to offer it at a lower price. With the release of this model, Nokia hopes to win some customers who are moving towards cheaper touchscreen phones like LG Cookie and Samsung S5230. What more can Nokia 5530 XpressMusic offer? Well it is a smartphone.

The phone dimensions are very good; it is only 13 mm thick. It has a length of about 104 mm and a width of 49 mm. The weight is excellent for a smartphone with touch screen: 107 grams, 2 grams less than 5800 classic. It stays better in a pocket than a 5800 classic, because it is thinner and shorter. It is available in a multitude of color combinations: black and red, blue and white, gray and black, pink and white and yellow and white.

nokia-5530-express-music

The front side is obviously dominated by the 2.9 inch touch screen, which offers a 16:9 image aspect ratio. That means watching movies in fullscreen mode will be a delight. Under the screen, we find 3 touch-sensitive buttons: dial key, reject calls key and the menu key. Just like in 5800 classic case, the multimedia key has the same position above the screen, along with the proximity sensor and with the speaker. The top side has only one button: the one, which turns the device on or off. The bottom is a little more crowded. Here you will find the microphone, the 3,5 mm audio jack, the plug charger and the microUSB port. The microUSB port is protected against dust. In the upper right you will find the stylus. An unpleasant surprise can be the fact that this phone cannot charge using the microUSB. On its right side you will find the volume control key, the button which locks and unlocks the screen, and the camera button. When you lock or unlock the screen, a short vibration will confirm your action.

nokia-5530-express-music2

On the left side you will find two slots, one for the microSD memory card and one for the SIM card. Both are protected from dust by a single plastic lid, but it is a little hard to open. Although you have access to the SIM card by side, you have to disconnect the battery first to get to the SIM card. That is because it must be pushed inside, otherwise you cannot pull it. The backside hosts a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus, which is equipped with a dual LED flash. Under the cap we find a 1000 mAh battery; it does not seem too much at first. The producer says the battery resists up to 336 hours on standby and up to 4 hours and 54 minutes of talk time and the time you can spend listening to your favorite music is approximately 27 hours with the battery fully charged.

Exactly as Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia 5530 XpressMusic uses Symbian S60 5th Edition platform. The user Interface is well optimized for the touchscreen. It has a good respond time; we did not have any blocking problems. This is where the 434 MHz ARM11 processor and 128 MB RAM contribute. I still felt the need to use the stylus when I was writing a longer text message. The virtual keyboard is good, but the letters are too small. The menu respond time is very good.

nokia-5530-express-music3

You have access to most frequently used functions from the standby screen. It takes only one simple touch to access the calendar, the profiles and the clock. You can immediately check for any unread message or email. All indicators are positioned on top of the screen, exactly as in Nokia 5800 classic. The TFT touch screen has 2.9 inch and offers a resolution of 360 x 640 pixels and 16 million colors. The proximity sensor automatically turns off when you speak, to save energy and not start any application by mistake. Unfortunately you do not see the screen very well in direct sunlight or in bright light.

There were no changes made to the address book in Nokia 5530 XpressMusic. It is the same one you find in Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. You can store in as many contacts as you want. You can add to each contact the details you wish to add. The phone gives you the possibility to display contacts from its own memory or from the SIM card memory. Searching for a contact is very easy; just type the first few letters of name or surname.

nokia-5530-express-music4

Nokia 5530 XpressMusic knows how to send and receive all types of messages, and by that I mean both text and multimedia. It uses the same editor for SMS and MMS. When sending an MMS you have the possibility to instantly record an audio message and attach it to the message. The editor recognizes handwriting, but is easier to write using the virtual QWERTY keyboard.

The email client is well formed. Settings are automatically made for known email providers, so you just need to enter a name and a password and you sign in to your account. It supports POP3 / IMAP and SMTP. You can download attachments without problems. The editor is not the same one as the SMS / MMS, but you can use the same virtual QWERTY keyboard, which is pretty good.

The phone has a 3.5 mm audio jack and comes with some very successful headphones. It has about 70 MB of internal memory, so you need a microSD card for saving music or videos. The file manager is remarkable. Once the memory slowly becomes full, you will need the file manager to make some order. You can create, move and rename the folders where you save your music files, your photos or your videos. The search function enables you to find both files and folders.

nokia-5530-express-music5

The audio player offers you almost everything you could possibly want. The songs are organized by name, artist, album, genre or composer. The sound quality is very good no matter you use the headphones or the external speakers. With a 3.5 mm jack, you can use any headphones you want. The video player is the same we know from Nokia 6630. Although it does its job well, the DivX and Xvid support is missing. Almost every movie uses these codecs, so it is a shame you cannot watch them. Nokia PC Suite helps you convert movies in a format supported by the phone (3GP or MP4). The FM radio has RDS, and a nice interface. It knows how to search and save channels available in your area.

The camera has 3.2 megapixels and it can take pictures at a maximum resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels. If the ambient light is not enough, the double LED flash helps a lot. The user interface allows you to do many manual settings, if you are an expert in photography. The camera is able to record videos too. It can record at a VGA resolution of 640 x 480 pixels with 30 fps.

Although it has WiFi, the 3G technology is missing. That means you will have a good internet connection only in areas with hotspots, otherwise you must use GPRS or EDGE

Nokia 5530 XpressMusic is a smartphone with rich functions and with a low price. It is suitable for those looking for music phone, movies or for surfing the Internet occasionally. If you want more pictures or need you need HSDPA connectivity, than this is phone is not for you.

Nokia 6500 Slide

Nokia 6500 slide is Nokia 6500 classic older brother. It resembles a lot in terms of functionality. However, being physically larger, Nokia had more room to add functions; functions that Nokia 6500 classic did not have. Shortly, these are video calls, FM radio and a better camera. Nokia 6500 slide is very rich in functions, although it is not a smartphone. It is built on the S40 platform from Nokia, so it has no Symbian operating system.

Although the Nokia 6500 slide is slightly larger than the Nokia 6500 classic, its package box is as thin as 6500 classic's package box. We will find the following accessories: charger, handsfree, manuals, software CD, microUSB cable, TV-Out and the Memory Card.

nokia-6500-slide

On its sides, the phone has the volume control buttons and the camera button. The top side is greatly crowded; there we have the 3.5 mm jack, used both for headphones and for TV-Out. Also, there we find the microUSB port, the charger plug and a button that releases the back cover (the one where you find the battery, the SIM card and the memory card).

The graphical interface is specific to S40 5th Edition. It is the same interface as in Nokia 6500 classic case. I find it ok; it is suitable for this phone. It does not have too much memory, only 20 MB, but as long as it is not a smartphone, it does not need a larger memory. I do not think you will have too many applications launched at the same time. Besides, you have the memory card, where you can save your pictures, songs and applications.

Nokia 6500 slide has a screen slightly bigger than Nokia 6500 classic, and by that I mean it has 2.2 inch and not 2 inch like Nokia 6500 classic. The resolution is 240x320 pixels, enough for this size. The screen is large enough so we can watch short films in reasonable conditions.

You will not have any problems with voice calls. The sound is loud and clear. Moreover, the classic 6500 had a small problem with signal reception. In areas with low signal, the phone was losing network, although another phone sitting next to him had signal. But no signal problems were found at Nokia 6500 slide. I think they made more efficient parts for radio reception, considering that the phone is bigger.

nokia-6500-slide2

The address book is the classic Nokia S40 one. It is easy to use it. You can quickly find a contact by typing the first few letters of its name. Nokia wants to simplify the messages in S40 phones. How can they do that?  It is simple. First, SMS and MMS reach the same inbox. If you want to send a message, you do not choose "text message" or "multimedia message", you simply choose "new message" and start the editor. How do you know if it is SMS or MMS?  Easy!  By default, it is a text message. If you add a picture, then it transforms into an MMS. This approach is very useful for less technical people, because they know they will send a picture to a friend. They do not care that it is via MMS or any other method. You still have the possibility to force the message type. This option is useful when you want to send a text message as an MMS instead of a sequence of SMS. The keys of Nokia 6500 slide are very good in writing messages, because the keys can be pressed slightly and provide a specific answer to the press.

Although it is not a phone that has a specific great function, Nokia 6500 slide got a good score for multimedia functions. Shortly, it is good for music, pictures and camera environment. But, let's take them one at a time.

The audio player was used initially on XpressMusic phones. That means the player is good and has many options. The sound quality is very good and you will not have any problems when listening to your own tracks or when listening to the radio.

The video player leaves a good impression too, for a phone that is not multimedia oriented. Here it gets a little minus because the screen size is not so generous, and it is very complicated to watch a longer video on it and not see it clearly. However, for short videos the screen is very good. The photos are very clear due to the high resolution screen.

Nokia N95 had a great impact when it came up with Carl Zeiss lens. Their quality made images a lot clearer. Nokia 6500 slide continues the tradition started by the Nokia N95 and comes with Zeiss lenses too. The resolution is somehow lower, because it has only 3.2 megapixels, but it is an excellent camera for this type of phone. The images are clear and the details are very well represented. It has autofocus and flash, which will allow you to take pictures from a short distance or weaker light. Even downloaded to your computer, the images look OK.

You can connect to the Internet using GPRS, EDGE and 3G technologies. Unfortunately, HSDPA and WiFi are not supported by this phone. The phone browser is very good. The e-mail client can be found in the messages menu and supports POP3, IMAP and SMTP. Sending and receiving e-mails is similar to the sending and receiving an SMS or an MMS. Nokia 6500 slide has Bluetooth and supports A2DP. That means you can listen to music on some Bluetooth stereo headphones.

All the latest Nokia phones have good organizer functions, both those using S60 platform and those using S40 platform. Nokia 6500 slide has an intuitive calendar, where you can see the day, the week or the month. You can add dating type events, or you can keep track of the tasks in the to-do list. Of course, you can add reminders for both events.

Nokia 6500 slide is not the right phone for mobile office. It does not have pre-installed applications that can read Word, Excel or PowerPoint. For Symbian there are a lot of applications on S40 platform. I do not say it is impossible to find a viewer in Java, but S40 is just not the phone in which you would like to modify a PowerPoint presentation and send it to your boss.

Nokia 6500 slide has other interesting applications preinstalled: a size converter, an application that lets you control a PowerPoint presentation from the computer using your phone, and even one program called Sensor from where you build a portal with images, messages which you can share via Bluetooth with other users from the same area that are using the same program.

It has five games installed: Snake III, Golf Tour, Rally 3D, High Roller Casino and Backgammon II. In addition, you can install many java compatible games.

Nokia 6500 slide is a very good phone. No matter how much I would bother trying to find weaknesses, I can only say that the only thing missing is the Symbian operating system. It looks good, it moves well, you can do with it almost everything you want to do with a phone. Moreover, it has a quality camera. You now find cameras almost in any phone, but few are quite good enough so you are not ashamed with your phone when you download the photos on a computer. I do not think I make any mistakes when I say that Nokia 6500 slide is for S40 platform phones what is N95 for Symbian phones.
