Android cell phone for Russian customers

The Android platform is a must-have for every cell phone manufacturer, as it’s all the rage these days. And if it’s understandable why famous companies are fighting each other for the Android market, what’s quite surprising is the fact that unknown players have dared to join this exclusivist party, trying their best to have a competitive Android phone to release in the market.

Such devices were presented by the manufacturers with much ado, even if the whole thing ended with the press release. Relevant examples are the DSTL1 designed by General Mobile and Kogan Agora. Now, there’s another Android cell phone waiting for the public appreciation.

The HIGHSCREEN PP5420 (quite complicated, don’t you think?), a project of Vobis Computer, is a device that is expected to become available sometime during the next week in the Russian market. Rumors say that the handset is in fact the “reincarnation” of the Mobinova Ice, which you might already read about. The main difference consists of the fact that the Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system has been replaced with the Android 1.5.

The list of features includes the Qualcomm MSM7201ATM (528 MHz), the Google Android operating system 1.5, GSM (850/900/1800/1900), WCDMA/HSDPA 7.2Mbps (900/2100), HSUPA, a 3 inches WQVGA flat TFT-LCD touch sensitive display, a 3 megapixel camera with autofocus, 256MB ROM/ 128 RAM, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, mini USB, FM radio, TV-Out, accelerometer, microSD card support and an 108 mAh battery.

The phone measures 114 x 53.5 x 13 millimeters and weighs no more than 120 grams, the battery being included. The price of the PP5420 is said to be 360 Euros for the Russian customers.

First landing on the moon celebrated by Motorola

For those of you who didn’t know (and I have to admit I didn’t either), there is something for the humanity to celebrate these days: I’m talking about the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11, which is sometime this month. I hope you didn’t raise that eyebrow because you don’t know what the deal is with Apollo 11. Anyway, just in case you lack information, Apollo 11 is the equivalent of the first landing on the moon.

I don’t know how many of you are interested in the celebration of the moon landing, but Motorola is. And the proof consists of the special edition launched by the company of the Aura, the so very expensive cell phone that I’m sure you’ve had the chance to read about. The new version is called the Celestial Edition and comes with pre-loaded audio clips that made history, just like the famous words “that’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” or ‘The Eagle has landed”.

The phone is identical with the first version as far as the features are concerned. What we don’t know right now is the price of the Celestial Edition, but I have a vague impression that it won’t be cheap.

It seems that the phone, which is part of the high-end range, will become available in Korea in three different versions: the Samsung W850, the Samsung W8500 and the Samsung W8550. Don’t worry, the handsets are not different as far as the features are concerned, the names are the only ones to differ. The reason is quite simple: there are three carriers that are interested in selling the device and each of the three has a different name prepared for the Jet.

The three carriers are as it follows: KTF, LG Telecom and SK Telekom. And they are ready to offer a phone that is equipped with a 3.5 inches WVGA AMOLED display, which is a little bit more than the S800 had to offer (the Jet has a 3.1 inches display), DMB support, a 5 megapixel camera, TouchWiz 2.0 user interface, GPS functionality, Bluetooth connectivity, a media player and many others.

As for the price of the W850 / W8500 / W9550, we have heard that the device will be sold under the price of 800,000 KRW (which means approximately $630).

Nokia Java Runtime 2.0 for S60

Nokia has just made a new announcement that has to do with the so-called Nokia Java Runtime 2.0 (also known as JRT 2.0) that is already available for those devices that run on the Symbian S60 5th Edition operating system. The Java Runtime 2.0 is actually a “totally re-written Java mobile execution environment for Nokia S60 devices”.

This is the beta version of the JRT 2.0 and comes with a bunch of improvements that were designed for a specific purpose: to help users enjoy a more amusing experience when it comes to the games and applications they can find either in Ovi Store or anywhere else.

The enhancements include: the installation of each application is one-click away, the experience of launching an application and the execution performance are both improved.

Another thing that will make users very happy is the fact that the further development and release of the Java Runtime won’t be connected anymore to the S60 releases. This means users will have the possibility to have the latest version on their smartphones using the functionality called Nokia S60 Software Update.

The Nokia Java Runtime 2.0 beta was tested with handsets like Nokia 5800 XpressMusic with the software versions 20.x.xxx and 21.x.xxx and the Nokia N97 with software versions such as 10.x.xxx and 11.x.xxx. So, if you want to download the new JRT 2.0, all you have to do is to just pay a visit to the official website of the Nokia Beta Labs.
