LG is launching new affordable cell phones

LG has released, without creating too much of a stir, a new affordable clamshell, the LG KP152. Don’t hurry up to go grab the device, because for the moment the handset is apparently available only on the LG Brazil website, but rumors say that it will be released in Europe too, in Russia for the beginning, starting this month.

You have to admit that the phone is unbelievably appealing, despite it quite simple design. LG KP152 is surely an elegant device, but unfortunately its features are not at all ones to crave for. The phone might represent the beginning of LG’s new campaign to conquer emerging markets with basic devices, similar to what Nokia is doing with their recent introduction of affordable cell phones and innovative devices specifically for people in emerging markets.

Therefore, the features and capabilities are more than weak, there’s no doubt about it. Among the main specs of LG KP152 are included: a tri band GSM/GPRS connectivity, FM radio, VGA photo camera, a TFT display with 65k colors (its resolution is not known) and a 800mAh Li-Ion battery. So, if you’re one of those guys who are hunting the latest in technology, there’s no way for you to ever buy this.

Still you’ll remember the device, as it measures 88 x 47 x 17.3 millimeters and weighs only 80 grams. It’s rather uncertain what amazes the most, the low price or the way these measurements have been combined. On the other hand, the phone provides up to 3.5 hours of talk time and up to 350 hours of stand-by time.

Rumors say that LG KP152 will be the first in a long line of such phones, designed and developed to conquer emerging markets with cheaper and simpler devices and this approach might be the result of a survival plan the company came up with, in order to make it through the dark financial world crisis.

As I said before, unfortunately, this phone is available only in Brazil for the moment, but it is expected to arrive in Europe as well, probably in Russia at first, and it will most likely be available in two colors: red and black, with a retail price of somewhere around $100.

Meebo for Android has just been launched

Having an application compatible with the iPhone or the Android handsets has become every company’s most powerful dream. You have to run on Android to exist, you just have to! To prove my point, I’ll tell you that another Web-based Instant Messaging service, Meebo, is now available for Google’s Android platform, thanks to a Meebo for Android application.

Therefore, Meebo, the Web’s live communication platform, announced the launch of Meebo for Android, an instant messaging application that brings free and open communication to T-Mobile G1, the world’s first Android-powered mobile phone. Meebo for Android provides a simple “on the go” instant messaging experience for anyone with a Meebo account, or an account on one of the popular IM services, like Yahoo! Messenger, MSN Messenger, Google Talk, AIM and so on. The application will be available as a download through the phone via the Android Market.

Meebo for Android includes: access to all of your IM accounts through a single login and single buddy list, a fun and simple IM experience that’s similar to using meebo.com on your PC and real-time notifications, meaning that alerts of new IMs are pushed to the status bar even when Meebo runs in the background.

“We are excited to provide Meebo users and Android enthusiasts with a new way to connect live with their friends”, said Seth Sternberg, founder and CEO, Meebo. “Enabling access to Meebo on the go means that more and more people will think ‘Meebo’ for open communications whether they are at their home, work, school or none of the above!”.

The T-Mobile G1 is the world’s first Android-based mobile phone, which combines full touchscreen functionality and a QWERTY keyboard with a mobile Web experience. With a fun and intuitive user interface and one-touch access to Google Search, the T-Mobile G1 is also the first phone to provide access to Android Market, where customers can find and download unique applications to expand and personalize their phone.

To get Meebo for Android, just go to the AndroidMarket via your handset, search for “Meebo” and download the application.

E1110 and E2510, two new basic cell phones from Samsung

Samsung is getting ready to launch two new low-end devices: Samsung E1110 and Samsung E2510, both of them being obviously targeted to customers who don’t want to pay too much money for a mobile phone. Let’s face it, not everyone wants a smartphone that is singing and dancing, and try to somehow shun the stunning development of technology.

The first new handset, the Samsung E2510, is a clamshell that doesn’t look bad, despite its simple design. As a matter of fact, if we think about it, the simplicity might be the reason why the device is so good-looking. The E2510 does not feature an external display and comes with an internal one only, of 128 x 160 pixels and 65k colors.

On the other hand, the handset has no 3G connectivity and not even EDGE, so data transfers will be quite slow. Among the main features of the new Samsung clamshell are included: quad band GSM/GPRS connectivity, 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, MP3 player, FM radio, Bluetooth, USB, VGA camera and 15 MB of internal memory, with the possibility of expanding the capacity storage using microSD cards, up to 2GB. The phone provides up to 7 hours of talk time and up to 400 hours of stand-by time.

Samsung prepares two new basic cell phones, as I’ve said it before. Therefore, the second one is the Samsung E1110, a candybar that offers even fewer features than the E2510. Therefore, these include: a 128 x 128 pixels CSTN display, Bluetooth and USB, 1.5 MB of internal memory. Unfortunately, this time, there is no microSD card support. Weighing approximately 79 grams and measuring 106.4 x 44 x 15.7 millimeters, the device offers up to 8 hours of talk time and up to 20 days of stand-by time.

For the moment, there are no details about the pricing and availability of these two new Samsung basic cell phones.

LG KC560 is focused on music and style features

It seems like the cheap and simple LG KC550 provided with a 5 megapixel camera will soon end its loneliness, as LG is preparing its new companion. The upcoming LG KC560 phone looks pretty similar to its sibling. The main difference is that, instead of imaging features, the focus is on style and music.

The LG KC560 handset leaked today with a supposed release date just in time for the holidays and has, as we just said, multimedia as its key element. The most important gimmick on KC560 are small colored LEDs around the bottom side of the cover, that start blinking when the phone rings and can also flicker in tune with music playing on the phone. On the other hand, the phone has a golden D-pad and back panel.

Anyway, if we’re trying to put the imposing looks aside, the LG KC560 has quite a decent package of extras on board. Therefore, the specs of LG KC560 include: tri-band GSM (900/1800/1900), GPRS/EDGE connectivity, 2.4-inch 262K color QVGA TFT display, a 3.2 megapixel camera with LED flash, FM radio, USB and Bluetooth and microSD card slot.

The LG KC500 is expected to cost somewhere between 300 and 350 US dollars (meaning 237 – 270 euro) before taxes and subsidies, when it eventually becomes available. In the meantime, on the other hand, three new versions of already announced LG handsets appeared in what seems to be the week of bad taste over at the Korean manufacturer. The LG KF300, KF510 and KF570 are all receiving their own gold-plated carbon copies. Save for the looks, nothing has changed in those new versions.

There are a couple of days since Nokia announced that the much anticipated Nokia N96 is now available in the United States. The handset is the newest Nokia smartphone in the Nseries range of products, being the official successor of the N95. Nokia N96 was publicly announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona 2008, and started selling in September, Europe, Middle East and Asia-Pacific being the first locations to provide the handset for consumers.

The Nokia N96 boasts a powerhouse of entertainment ready features, including a 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, turn-by-turn voice navigation, 16GB of internal memory, expandable up to 24GB with an optional microSD card, superior sound and music, N-Gage gaming and a stunning 2.8-inch display. The company announced that N96 will now be available through open channels in the United States, including the Nokia Flagship stored in New York and Chicago, on nokiausa.com and a number or independent retailers and e-tailers.

Alessandro Lamanna, Vice President of Sales, Open Markets, Nokia Americas, says that “the Nokia N96 offers the best of mobile entertainment, blending phone and multimedia options seamlessly with the unique Nokia Nseries dual slider – a great way to discover and share your favorite moments. The device can store up to 40 hours of video content transferred from a PC via hi-speed USB 2.0 connection or online with WLAN and HSDPA support. In addition, Nokia N96 supports the most common video formats including MPEG-4, Windows Media Video and Flash Video. Therefore, you can enjoy the action on your videos with the device’s vivid 2.8-inch display and integrated 3D stereo speakers.

On the other hand, Nokia N96 helps users to capture clear, vibrant, high quality video clips at 30 frames per second as well as sharp, defined photos with the 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and dual LED Flash. More than that, the enhanced navigation experience of the Nokia N96 includes rich, easy-to-use maps with urban detail as well as satellite views. You can try out three months of free voice guided turn-by-turn navigation – for walking or driving – along with the new City Guides that offer a great way to explore undiscovered places.

The device is compatible with high-speed 3G HSDPA networks in the US (850 and 1900 MHz) and is expected to cost an estimated 895 USD.
