Qt for S60 brings a plus to application development

Qt Software announced today the porting of Qt to S60 on Symbian OS™, the world’s leading, open smartphone platform. Qt (pronounced “cute” by its creators) is a cross-platform application development framework that is widely used for the development of graphical user interface programs (in which case it is known as widget toolkit) and also for developing non-GUI programs such as console tools and servers.

Frequently used in KDE, Opera, Google Earth, Skype, Qtopia, Photoshop Elements, VirtualBox and OPIE, Qt is produced by the Norwegian company QT Software, formerly known as Trolltech, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nokia, starting June 17, 2008.

Qt is a powerful C++ application development framework that helps developers create applications once and then deploy them on any of the Windows, Mac, Linux, Windows CE, Windows Mobile and embedded Linux platforms. With the inclusion of the S60 platform, developers have an additional 80 million target devices that they can support with their Qt-based applications (by the end of July 2008 Nokia alone had shipped approximately 80 million fully web-capable S60 Third Edition devices).

According to Sebastian Nyström, Vice President of Qt Software, Nokia, “Qt brings an elegant and intuitive C++ development tool to the S60 platform, improving the ability to develop richer user experiences on the platform and making S60 on Symbian OS even more attractive for developers to target with their applications and services”.

S60 software built on Symbian OS is the world’s leading smartphone software and is licensed by some of the industry’s foremost mobile device manufacturers. Almost 180 million S60 devices had been shipped by all licenses by June 2008. Because of S60 software’s flexibility, various hardware designs and software configurations are allowed, as evidenced by the multitude of S60 devices already available on the market.

For those who are interested, there is an early technical preview of Qt for S60, which can be downloaded from Qt Software current website, www.trolltech.com. This is in line with Qt Software’s usual approach of developing Qt openly and working with the community to incorporate feedback throughout the entire development process. Qt on S60 will work with S60 third Edition Feature Pack 1 and later releases. The first production release of Qt for S60 will be available starting the second quarter of 2009.
