As part of a strategy to more closely engage customers and encourage feedback on its products and services, Vodafone has confirmed that it will launch a presence in Second Life, an online virtual world developed by Linden Labs.

Vodafone will join the ranks of business like the BBC, CNET, and Toyota with a presence in Second Life after the launch of Vodafone Island, its in-game headquarters. Vodafone will create branded handsets and a virtual phone network allowing users to contact each other in the game with voice calls and SMS messages, with Vodafone Island presumably being a hub where users can purchase these virtual handsets.
