Vodafone launches it’s first own branded phone

Vodafone 710 PhoneVodafone launched it's first own branded mobile handset, the Vodafone 710. This is very interesting, that a big network operator decided to produce it's own handsets...I wonder how the marketing strategy will be and what does this mean for other phone producers.

This phone's features, design and functionality were specified by Vodafone to maximize customers' use of its services. It is the first handset manufactured for Vodafone by China's Huawei Technologies as a result of a strategic handset alliance signed by the two companies in February 2006. The device is supported by the leading, industry standard, Qualcomm chipset.

The move will assist the uptake of 3G services, due to the lower cost per handset and the fact that the Vodafone 710 will be offered on prepay as well as contract, and will provide wide market access to 3G.

The Vodafone 710 incorporates easy access to core Vodafone services including Vodafone Radio DJ, Mobile TV, music downloads, video telephony and Vodafone live! with 3G. In addition, the handset includes an MP3 music player, a 1.3 megapixel camera and Bluetooth. The Vodafone 710 will be launched in the UK, Germany, Spain, Italy, Ireland, Greece, Netherlands, Romania and Portugal from early October 2006.

The Vodafone 710 is the first UMTS phone to be marketed by Vodafone under its own brand name. The phone's design and function are optimised for the use of Vodafone services, enabling simple operation. It is the first product of a strategic joint venture with the Chinese manufacturer, Huawei Technology, that started out seven months ago.

The Vodafone 710 is an elegant black clamshell phone with a 1.3 megapixel CMOS digital camera. It supports the attractive Vodafone live! UMTS services, MobileTV, VideoTelephony, MusicDownloads and Radio DJ.

The inexpensive Vodafone 710 will be on sale at retail outlets in the next few weeks.

Vodafone 710 features:
- 1.3 megapixel CMOS digital camera with a resolution of up to 1280x 960 pixels and 8x digital zoom
- TFT colour display (176x220 pixels) with 262,144 colours

- Weight: 99 g
