Zero Ink Paper

Zero Ink Paper

Two days ago I was thinking in those Polaroid photo cameras that allow you to print the picture immediately after taking it and I was wondering what happened with those devices lately, as I haven’t heard about them since years.
Today I was surfing the web in searching for some cool mobile printers and found out about the Polaroid Digital Instant Mobile Photo Printer, a sleek device that uses ZINK paper type to print pictures directly from your cell phone.

It seems that ZINK, also called Zero Ink, is a new technology invented by ZINK Imaging, and the compatible Polaroid printer measures about the size of a deck of cards, measuring a few ounces.
It connects to your cell phone via Bluetooth or the ZINK-compatible digital camera via a PictBridge USB cable, and is capable of producing full-color, 2 x 3 inch prints in just a few seconds but without the use of inks.

The Polaroid printer model is the world’s first ZINK-enabled device available and is powered by a 7.2V Li-Ion battery. The company promises to bring other enabled devices soon, including the digital camera.

ZINK is a breakthrough technology that uses the patented Zero Ink paper, an advanced composite material with embedded yellow, cyan and magenta dye crystals activated with 200 million heat pulses in 30 seconds and in a single pass.
100 billion crystals in a 2 x 3-inch print are enough for the paper to be 100% inkless.
The heat coming from the printer activates and colorizes the crystals and because there is no ink cartridge, the printer can be design to be very slim and small.

Other ZINK paper key features include the capability of reproducing millions of vivid colors at a very high resolution, it is not toxic but eco-friendly, a polymer overcoat protects it against water increasing the image durability, it is not sensitive to light, and resists fading.
For the business cards, ZINK Imaging produced the 2 x 3-inch formats with semi-gloss finish and adhesive backing.
